Welcome to the Team: Christopher Bracamonte

Basics:
Name: Christopher Bracamonte
Age: 21
Hometown: Woodland Hills Ca
Resides: Woodland Hills Ca
Year started bmx and why: I spent a lot of time at home riding my bike around the neighborhood, then I went to a skatepark for the first time and I was hooked. I think it was 2002 that I started riding everyday

Fill in the Blanks--
Being a part of the Action Village team to me means getting opportunities to dial in my bike with good parts and possibly travel.

The first thing I did when I found out I got sponsored was
I went to the trails to celebrate.

vitalbmx.com is my favorite website besides ActionVillage.com

I would do 100 hop barspins in a row  for 100 dollars.

My favorite pros are Ty Morrow, Brian Kachinsky, Chris Doyle, JJ Palmere, Mike Aitken, Rob Wise and Dennis Enarson.

My favorite bike spot is UCLA or hans' trails

Everyone should take time to dig at the trails

My favorite thing besides BMX is making videos

The last person I called was my girlfriend Kellie to tell her about winning this sponsorship

Van Homan  was my hero growing up and Dennis Enarson  is my hero now.

The best advice I ever got was if you fall, get back up and try again

With my $1,000 sponsorship I am going to buy  some parts I need for my bike like a fork and tires, a travel bag and a few Christmas gifts for my family.

If You Can't Beat 'em , Avoid 'em - How to Ride While Bicycle Advocacy Groups Attempt to Change the World

Every month there is at least 1 or 2 stories in the news about an injury or death resulting in a bicycle vs. car incident. Everyday, I read on multiple internet forums and social networking sites about promoting bicycle advocacy, "getting involved" and reaching out to the community; admittedly I jumped on that bandwagon for some time. I respect these people's desire to make change and becoming the voice for all varieties of cyclists. It's neat to see people get involved.

I've been doing some reflecting recently and realized that I, growing up on a BMX bike and riding far distances everyday to session spots, never had a car vs. bicycle incident. We didn't obey traffic rules, had lights on our bikes, or had to blow a whistle. We didn't have the internet nor were we aware of any bicycle advocacy happening at that time. We didn't wear helmets, reflective clothing or any other "safety" clothing aside from shin guards to keep us from tearing up our shins. But I never, ever had a car entanglement.

When I started road cycling a few years ago, I took all the safety awareness lessons I've been reading about on the web and applied them. Coincidentally, this was the time I was hit by a car. And as recently as yesterday, while riding with my wife on a very wide road, we were hassled by a couple of douchebags who thought it'd be funny to buzz us and scream to scare us.

Usually, when I ride, I never experience these interactions with cars simply because I've re-adopted the way I used to ride when I was a kid. I do obey traffic rules, and I utilize and encourage safety gear like a helmet, reflective clothing and lighting (I'm all grown up now), but I stay WAY off main roads and avoid busy streets as much as possible. I cut through pathways, take dirt paths and residential streets, hop curbs, ride through parks, trails and other "workarounds". If I must absolutely be on a street, I choose super wide streets with large bike lanes or if there is no bike lane, I hop up the curb and ride on the sidewalk. In other words - I've adapted my riding style to survive an environment that is not bicycle friendly. This is exactly the way we used to ride our 20" bikes in the 80's and 90's - but we didn't do it for safety... we did it for fun.

"Work-arounds" like Coyote Creek Trail provide miles of car-free riding

I can't wait for the world to rebuild a bicycle friendly infrastructure, nor do I have the time to go to city council meetings. I don't agree with the way Critical Mass presents itself and I would never get involved with it. But, I do have a BMX background, and I do know how to get in and out of ride in stealth mode.

Next time you route your ride or if you have a daily commute - consider your options. Get comfortable with riding off road, getting up and off curbs without falling and seeing opportunistic alternative cut-throughs in your town. You don't have to subject yourself to becoming a sitting duck out there while bicycle advocacy groups try to change the world.

Hey, if Cru Jones can do it...

Crossover kid!

We headed up to practice at the Salem indoor moto track at the fairgrounds last night for Marcus to get his roost on. He hasn't had much time on the bike as of late, the last time on a track was In September I believe. He also hasn't had much track time since switching from his four stroke 50 to the two stroke 65. He has been improving steadily but has usually been timid and slowly pushes himself to new comfort limits. We arrived at the track and did a walk through checking out the track before practice started. The arena is fairly small making for a tight track. I pointed him out a few sections that I thought he should push himself on. A triple step up, step down had a good run up and told him he should at least jump up the first step and a couple tables out of corners that were short enough even with little run up to try clearing. The rhythm section had a tall double into three small whoop style doubles. I was a little nervous for him with regard to the rhythm. He has had very little experience riding tight obstacles like that and the tight proximity of the corral fence along side the track and likely hood of "whiskey throttle" made me worry he might crash. He was in the first practice and the track was still freshly plowed and his typical timid approach got him around the track slowly at first but his lap times quickly became noticeably shorter. He even jumped the step up by the end of the round. Stoked! We have been racing BMX steadily lately and I'm not certain that's what has helped boost his confidence but I'm sure it hasn't hurt. In the second round he continued jumping the step and started consistently jumping one of the two tables. He also started jumping the first of the small whoop doubles in the rhythm after single, singling over the bigger double. He also started attempting the next double. Super stoked! By the third round he was tired and not sure he wanted to ride but went out again any way. He finally jumped the other table with the shortest run up but then crashed on the other looping out getting dragged along into the dirt. I figured he was tired and done then for sure. To my surprise he got up took a few more laps and even double, double, doubled out of the rhythm. Ecstatic! The above clip is one of his earlier attempts. Filming with my iphone was difficult with limited track access and poor angles so excuse the quality.

Josh Eilken: Sun Ringle Trip and Edits

I just recently went on a sun ringle trip that was amazing. I went to Dayton Ohio for the DK Dirt Circuit witch was really fun. I had a great time got to meet a lot of riders that I have always wanted to meet. I also got a tour of the DK warehouse and got to shred the ramps all I have to say is that place is too fun! If you ever get the invite don't pass it up.

Our next stop was Columbus Ohio where I finally got meet the legend him self, Steven Hamilton. He got on my bike at the famous Columbus curved wall ride and did an opp curved wall to 3 out. It was pretty sick.

After our wild encounters with Steven and all the shredding we did in Columbus we made the next move to West Virgina which was weird because I have never been to West Virginia so I didn't know what to expect. It turns out there was a lot of good stuff there, like hills so there was all kinds of things to ride.

We made our way to Pittsburgh. The trails in PA are real talk. I got to see fellow ActionVillage rider Chris Doyle ride trails for the first time in my life. It was a treat! Then we ended the trip at Mark Potoczny's crib where he had a sick jam in his back yard people rode all day and partied all night.

The following four Sun Ringle edits were all from that trip!
Enjoy,
Josh Eilken

I Crashed - Body Planted on a Wet Wood Bridge

I rarely crash, but when I do, I have to say... it can be epic. I guess when I ride the mountain bike, I don't expose myself to too many bad situations, but every once in awhile I don't think ahead and I end up on the ground. On the rare occassion I ride my BMX, crashing is every 30 min., so I guess it's all relative.

The other day, I was riding Santa Teresa County Park having the damndest time negotiating the rocks after the rain started to come down. Climbing slick rocks is a biatch, so when I got the the descend, I was relieved.

Unfortunately, I wasn't thinking when I hit the wood bridge, and I instantly lowsided and bodyplanted pretty damn hard. I was going about 15MPH. Bruised left inner thigh, bruised right hip, bloody and bruised shin, skinned elbow.

Thankfully, the 29'er is SOLID, so I aligned the seat back forward and went on my merry way.

Until the moisture goes away, I'm taking the bridges a lot slower.

Cam White's Hillside Dirtjam Highlights Video

Click here to view the video

Despite the bad weather forecast, Cam White's 5th annual Hillside Dirtjam went off in Canberra, Australia. A big international rider line up made the trip to Australia for the event, including Hucker, Anthony Napolitan, James Foster and Brandon Dosch, they were joined by the regular Aussie crew consisting of former champ Dane Searls, Josh Stead, Cam Pianta and many more. New Zealand's top dirt jumps Jed Mildon and Paul Langland also joined in.

Hucker and Dane had both won the event in the past, but on the night Hucker's crazy riding prevailed, and he ended up scoring the 'King Of The Hill' title. Best Trick came down to Brandon Dosch with a transfer triple whip, Jed Mildon blasting a massive double flip on the big trick jump, and James Foster nailing a perfect whip to double whip back. In the end the votes were tied on James and Jed, so they both shared the winner's cash. Best Style once again went to Aussie Josh Stead who was on a rampage all night.

Some other highlights included Hucker's backflip cliffhanger and crazy corked 720's over the big trick jump, Dane Searls' super extended 360 super seatgrab indy, Brakeless Billy stomping a never before attempted transfer from the big trick jump lip over to the long and low landing and Paul Langland with a bunch of crazy superman variations.

Unit team rider Jed Mildon has been busy organizing the annual Taupo Main Street Jam and Rollercoaster Mega Ramp Contest in New Zealand, and both events turned out crazy!

The locals don't often get a chance to ride good contests and set-ups, so when the chance comes along they don't pass up the opportunity. Some big tricks went down, as well as some big crashes.

3 Bmxers are out of the closet!

So... not quit as suggestive as that sounds, but cleaning out some things I found a bunch of old mags in a closet. Three of them I thought needed sharing as they brought back some good memories. The first is a rare print ad from Solid Bikes featuring none other than little brother, Eric Walter. Eric had been denied entry into Canada on the team road trip and was expressing his thoughts on the matter. Look at him, can you blame them? Ha! This was in issue #4 fourth quarter 2000 of BMX Action that would later become Faction BMX mag.

This next one is none other than Riley Peetz on the August-September #14 issue of Faction BMX. Fastplant, Churchhill.

The last on is Justin Inmans February 2003 Ride BMX cover. Gnarly Fufanu, Burnside. This photo doesn't do this trick justice. See it in person and it's a whole different monster.

Welcome to the team: James Barton

The Basics:
Name: James Barton
Age: 20
Hometown: Kingston, Ontario
Resides: St. Catharines, Ontario
Year started bmx and why: I started racing BMX when I was 10 years old. A friend who lived across the street from me was the national champion for his age, and he got me addicted quick. There is no better feeling than cruisin' on a bike. By the time I was 12, I gave up racing for freestyle. More fun, more freedom.

Fill in the Blanks:
Being a part of the Action Village team to me means getting involved in a great action sports community.

The first thing I did when I found out I got sponsored was tell my house-mates at University. We had a guys night out and saw a live band, good times.

Thecomeupbmx.net is my favorite website besides ActionVillage.com

I would try to ride up a 20 stair for 100 dollars.

My favorite pros are Garrett Reynolds, Randy Taylor, Brian Kachinsky.

My favorite bike spot is my backyard mini. 4 ft quarters and a small spine, I learned flairs there haha.

Everyone should take time to enjoy nature. I love being outside. It is an essential part of my life. Throw in a bike and that's all I need.

My favorite thing besides BMX is music. I am a proud metalhead. I also love ambient instrumental music.

The last person I called was my buddy Marty, hoping he could give me a ride to the skatepark. He did, awesome guy.

Ryan Leech was my hero growing up and Garrett Reynolds is my hero now.

The best advice I ever got was don't let things pass you by. If you have an opportunity to try something new, take it! Life is about new experiences.

With my $1000 shopping spree I'm going to buy all the essential parts that must be replaced every once in a while.
-I am getting a few KMC 710 chains (lightest strongest chain out there in my opinion)
-Some fit FAF-K tires for the front and an animal for the rear. My favourite tire combo.
-Animal Edwin grips. They have a soft grippy feel that I have not felt on any other grip.
-animal plastic pedals
-a new cult seat post

And some big ticket items that I am looking at that I haven't had before:
-Cult stem and fork
-Kink Empire Revision C Frame, looks so nice.
-Premium whiskey bars, so I can throw barspins like Garrett Reynolds haha.

Hope every one had a good weekend!!
Here at Unit we got some of the BMX team in for a photo shoot which will be using for an upcoming team ad and the boys let loose in the photo studio, funny times!! Do not try and get a nice photo standing next to Richo, he has issues..

We also had the chance to shoot Caroline Buchanan who is our Bmx Racer. After the shoot we went for a ride at GC Compound and even taught Caroline 360’s in the foam pit and tire grabs on the resi.

Towards the end of the sesh Nick Cooper fired out this massive wall ride to seal the night.

Richo didn’t make it to the skate park because he had to rush home and clean the house because he got the boot and trying his best to get his bond back hahaha. If anyone has a free apartment on the Gold coast hit Richo up hes looking for a new pad. Good luck

2011 Superbowl Sunday Mt. Hamilton Ride

I did this ride last year on my Surly Pacer and had a decent time, albeit very, very slow. I did it again, this time with a serious handicap - I took the "UNBRANDED". This year was another time in a last place finish, although I had three guys to do it with me: Leopold Porkstacker, Nelson34 and SparkyJay from MTBR.com.

What got me to take the UNBRANDED was that Porkstacker (Brett) was going to take his fat bike, and so I thought it'd be supportive to take mine. By time it was all loaded up, my bike definitely weighed over 40lbs which was a serious heavy haul. It wasn't bad in the beginning, but near the end, my stomach started to growl and a slight bonking was in the works. I think the Surly would've prevailed - but I'll save that for next year. My guess I probably will get up a little faster - but that wasn't really the goal for this ride.

All in all, I had fun with our little social pace group. My favorite quote was from Robert (nelson34) when he said "My whole body is a cramp..."

I also learned that the "UNBRANDED" was a fine bike for getting up, but it was just very slow. I think this bike will do fine for rides that don't require a steady 20 mile climb, but my big road rides for this year will probably be on the Surly Pacer. The WTB Pure-V saddle started to get uncomfortable near the top, and eventually painful on my sit bones.

Good times and thanks to all for providing refreshments afterwards. Next year I'm not going to be such a freeloader and bring something. This ride, like Turkey Day, seems to be getting bigger every year!

The beer table...

I ended up having one afterwards. Delicious!
