Big thanks to the guys from Black Rock Mountain Bike Association for donating the cash for the skid steer rental. We moved quite a bit of dirt with emphasis on lines for beginner to intermediate skill levels, but designed to be fun enough to keep everyone entertained. If you can't have fun at the trails this summer you have issues. Serious issues. Unfortunately many of the locals have sustained injuries that have them sidelined and as the weather dries out and heats up the dirt is as well and getting tougher to move and shape. The old lines are damn near ready for riding, we have been sessioning the first few a bit and things are getting fast. So here is my plea for help, come down grab a shovel and pitch in and help get everything rolling. Mostly shaping and packing as all the dirt has been piled at the ready by the skid steer. Throw some shovels full and help ride in the old stuff. Backwoods out.

OUTSIDE [jomopro2012]

this video is for all the riders that came out this year, and everyone that helped me get there myself.

i wanted to not only film links outside of the contest runs, but get myself outside. i tried to capture the kinds of things i see when i don't have my camera with me. many clips were filmed from far away, allowing the pure vibe and riding to take place.

thanks for taking the time to check this out, and if you like it, please share it with a friend.

thanks!

Josh Grant Podiums in New Orleans SX

Photo: Transworld MX

We are stoked to announce that Unit's newest team rider Josh Grant has just had the ride of his life to stomp 2nd place at the New Orleans round of the AMA Supercross, right behind 2012 series champion Ryan Villopoto.

Grant is fresh off injury, and after a few hard years, team changes and the birth of his son, Grant has a fresh outlook on racing, and a new motivation to succeed. We would like to congratulate Josh, his family and team on the result, and hope there is many more to come!

In other Unit team news from New Orleans, up and coming privateer Austin Politelli scored his best result ever with a 9th place in the main event, and Kyle Chisholm also scored one of his best results for 2012 with an 8th place overall.

For more about Josh's story, check out his full profile HERE, as well as his new Unit video below...

Sea Otter Recon Mission Ride Report and more on the On-One 456...

I know I should have been at Church on Sunday (Palm Sunday) but I went on a April Fool's Recon Mission with Ken and Newton instead. This ride was to specifically investigate the Sea Otter course and see how to plan it out for race day.

This was my first time riding Laguna Seca, and I have to say that it was actually pretty awesome. TONS of land to be ridden and a few really fun single track sections. But the land is so vast and so intertwined, you can really get lost out there.

The Sea Otter course for the Cat3 (Fat3 is what I call it for myself) is actually not as punishing as I thought it would be. Yes, there is some cranked-out climbing, but there are also a lot of recovery sections and fast, pinned flat areas. I am especially excited about the single track sections, because if it dries out more, it will be rail'able, which is definitely my riding strengths.

This is a pretty nasty, very sandy downhill section where I simply unclipped, hung my right foot out and slid down it - somehow managing to keep it upright. You can see, Ken decided to run down it. I foresee some epic crashes on this section.

I am racing with a CamelBak, which I never wear when I ride. I don't want to fiddle with trying to grab the water bottle while I'm tapped out, and I know I may blast through one water bottle - so I'm choosing to race with 35-40 ounces in the bladder. The CamelBak worked well and I think it should be great for the 16 mile course.

Back to the On-One 456...

This bike is totally different with the new 400mm seat post installed. With proper leg extension on my downstroke when pedaling, it is now an efficient climber (to a certain extent). It is not, by any means, near the efficiency of a true XC bike, but for all mountain riding, I have to say that I am enjoying it quite a bit. The technical climbs are simply a blast and railing on double tracks with jumps and other fun things is what this bike does really, really well.

I still think that maybe an 18" would be more to my liking, but the 16" with the long flagpole sticking out of the seat post tube seems to be just fine.

If you are in that strange "average" height category (5'9" - 5'10") I would advise to try riding a friend's 456 before ordering a frame. I really think I would've went with an 18" if I had the opportunity to try one for fit. For your reference, I am 5'9" with a 30" inseam.

Melanie Denton Relief Fund.

Melanie is a 19 year old BMX rider who was hurt badly while riding a spine ramp at a jam recently in Austin Texas. After shredding all day, she went over the bars coming down the spine and landed face first. She was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance and suffered some major facial damage. Melanie like many others currently has no health insurance and many bills are stacking making the situation a lot harder to deal with. After surgery and the ER visit she is roughly $9,000 in debt from this one wreck and is reaching out to the BMX world requesting donations to help during this healing time. Please be kind from one BMX rider to another. Giving anything you can will always be helpful. Every dollar counts!

The Leader got Lighter (and stops better, too!)

My China-brand "Mosso" aluminum fork finally came in and I installed it with some new Avid BB7's and red anodized brake cable housing. Bling bling!

Taking it out to the trails the other day, I was really expecting the aluminum fork to rattle my brain - not so! I was surprised to find that it wasn't any more harsh than my steel Kona 29'er fork. And after riding the 29'er for so long, you tend to forget how nice 26" wheels are for maneuverability in tight situations.

Sea Otter Race Report and The New Vintage KHS

Trying my best to HTFU at the finish line

Today was my first MTB race - and what better place to pop my MTB race cherry than Sea Otter? If you haven't experienced the glory of the Sea Otter Classic (and you like bicycles) you are missing quite the show. From dirt jumping, trials, cyclocross, dual slalom, road racing, cross-country, short circuit... they definitely have something for everyone. Biggest complaint was that you are nickel'ed-and-dime'd everywhere you turn, but that is usually a given with an event like this.

A couple of months ago, the guys from Team Social Pace and I decided we were going to sign up for the cross-country race. I had my reservations, given my sorry experience with cyclocross racing - but I really, really enjoy MTB riding, so I figured this would be more to my liking.

I got a decent start, considering I was jammed all the way in the back of the line-up, and I kept my pace throughout the 16 mile course. I forgot to turn on my Garmin, so I don't have the stats for what really went down, but I think I was able to maintain my heart rate at an average of 163 bpm.

In the beginning, the course was incredibly foggy, and it was difficult to navigate through the fire road descents. I saw a handful of guys bomb past me - so in the future I will take more time in scouting the course and becoming accustomed to it.

I had three significant newbie mistakes:

1) In my attempt at being courteous to others in faster categories, I waved by a few riders in my class, not seeing that I did until they were gone. Fortunately, I passed them on some of the climbs in the next few miles.

2) I crashed. Again, as I was letting riders go, someone from the faster group hooked handlebars with me and we both went down. That cost me some time.

3) I had a strange, cross-chaining situation that I had to pull over and rectify. That cost me time.

In the end, I finished 50 out of 62 in Cat3, 35-39 - which I am content with. I guess you can say it is the "front of the back of the pack".

I think I like MTB racing more than cyclocross. CX just frustrated me, but MTB was a little more satisfying - best of all, I had friends there who were spread out in other classes - and afterward we got to meet up, congratulate each other, and enjoy the camaraderie.

Until next year?

My Fairy Princess Bike

I don't know what's wrong with me.

Really... for some reason I had a wild-hair to find a steel (preferably lugged), vintage MTB. After dealing with some weirdos on Craigslist, I finally found something that I liked - a 1988 KHS Montana Pro.

I made some arrangements with the seller to meet in Mountain View, Ca. and purchase it for $85 - thinking that it would need some serious work. However, when I met with her, I discovered it was in pristine condition. She was the original owner, and all the parts were original except the tires. It is built with Tange steel, and constructed with triple butted chromoly - completely bathed in appropriate late 80's teal and purple color scheme.

Well, obviously, I couldn't leave it alone, so I did some minor mods, a gearing change to make it more practical by today's standards, and added more color. It rides beautifully!

Before
Now, it is my Fairy Princess Bike... and this man, is not afraid to bust out on the trail every so often.

Nice Weather + Good Session = Great Photos

Dan hit me up Saturday about wanting to shoot some photos at the park in the morning. I met up with him at 10 the next morning, he was the only one at the park. I had to laugh at him and remind him most BMXer's don't get up that early on a weekday let alone the weekend. The weather was awesome for a January day and quit a few locals rolled in for a good session. Dan clicked away capturing the action and yelled his critiques when the tricks didn't match his expectations for his photos. Couple pics to sample below but be sure to check out his site to see the rest here.

Shaping up to be an epic season

I don't think we even had any runs in last year at this time due to all the late rain. Summer didn't start until after the official calander day. This year things are so much better. It didn't look to promising for locals due to injuries plauging many riders this year but the youngin's is steppin they game up. JC locals Nick, Johnny, Mitch, and Trevor have been out frequently and now they are rocking brakes they are quickly working their way down the big line. I expect they all will make it through everything soon. Stoked to see new trail riders on the come up. Last year we only had a handful of regulars at the trails, this year it has been common to have 8-9 riders a day coming through.
Tex Diesel shot some photos of Sykes getting his boost on yesterday. Click the link to check out more.

4130 Subway Series - San Jose, Ca.

We're bringing the 4130 Subway Series to Nor-Cal! SHARE THIS WITH YOUR FRIENDS!

Date: February 18th, 2012
Start: 150 East San Fernando St., San Jose, Ca. - San Jose State University Martin Luther King Jr. Library
Time: 3:00pm - ?:??pm

First ride will be in San Jose, Ca. meeting at the Martin Luther King Jr. Library at San Jose State University. This is a BMX/Urban/Street ride, so come with your 20", 24" or 26" bikes. Everyone is invited, but this ride is truly for the O.G.'s. Street, dirt jumpers, BMX cruisers, side-hacks, trials, flatland - all are welcome.

We will end the ride at the San Jose City Hall on 4th and Santa Clara.

THIS IS NOT a fixie ride, San Jose Bike Party or Critical Mass, so please don't make it that. This is a BMX/street ride where the buzzing of freewheels will be our soundtrack for the afternoon and evening.

The loop is 10.34 miles and will take us to Santana Row and back using the main streets. There are stops every 2-3 miles at major intersections so nobody gets lost, but you are on your own if you do. The ride starts at 3:00pm and will end just in time for an early dinner (you're going to be hungry by that time) and there are plenty of options in and around the end point back at San Jose State University.

Some of you will choose to stop and session some areas, which is cool - but please stay legal. If you choose to ride something you're not supposed to, break the law or get popped for something illegal (riding or otherwise), you are on your own.

We may be riding into the evening, so bring some front and rear bicycle lights. Riding without lights at night is illegal - again, you are on your own.

Let's have some fun. Please, no monkey business and no bad attitudes. Rain WILL cancel and re-schedule this ride, so let's hope the weather holds up for us.

The route is HERE.

Here's how it goes down in Las Vegas:
