Bike Riding is just Not Climbing...

For the past year, I've been pondering how and why being a fast climber is the pinnacle of MTB riding and road riding. At least, outside of the loose-jersey DH guys, this seems to be what many are striving for. Many times I've read - and experienced myself - people's "fitness running out of talent"; you know the folks who haul ass uphill just to white knuckle and on brake a descend? I also understand people's fear and risk trade-off's - although with some focus on skillful descending, many (if not most) people can overcome this.

A lot of people talk about working on their fitness for climbing - and granted, most of us can use that sort of focus. Myself, I've been trying to get faster on climbs for the past 5 years (since I started MTB'ing seriously). However, why not take a few rides out of the week to focus on downhill skills, cornering, obstacles and flow? These skills, at least in my Cat3 point of view, are equally as valuable to being a great climber.

I appreciate it when I see fast riders at the top of Strava on both uphills and downhills - but also find it strange to see fast climbers WAY behind me on DH segments. I ask: What happened there? Even though I get smoked at races, it amazes me how much faster riders will hold me up on the downhill sections.

People use the old clich: "Races are won on the climbs..." - but what good is that if you're not racing?

I get that many people ride for many reasons - and some people will just huddle-up to their strengths. My strength is downhill, technical and flow (God Bless BMX) - so I work on my climbing to try and balance my riding... but I still work on my downhill a LOT. Not only is it fun, but to me, it makes sense to be a well-rounded rider.

Now that I got that off my chest, here's Chad Degroot's segment from Baco 10...

Skatetalk ?That?s Life? Team Commentary

Cinephiles such as myself always look for the DVD extras as a source of education and knowledge. There is plenty of back-story behind every film that makes the movie a hundred times more interesting. It?s the extras on a DVD that make it worth the $24 you worked so hard for. Well here?s an opportunity to get the inside scoop behind the highly acclaimed Foundation video ?That’s Life?. Skatetalk Live! presents a not-so-live sit down commentary (hang-out-drink-beers-talk-shit) with the team from Foundation Skateboards “That’s Life” skateboard video. Although a few of the guys could not make it, it gives a little insight to what’s happened to the gang since the release of the video a decade ago. So sit back and enjoy, or don’t, we care, but we will pretend we don’t. P.S. Go Full Screen

Reflections on Bike Racing - Part II

In November of 2010, I posted THIS ENTRY in regards to CX racing.
"I think CX racing is not my thing. I really dug deep to think of why I lost interest and there's many reasons (mostly work stress), but I don't think I have the racer's mindset. I can't dig deep enough within to make a competitive attempt. What it is, is I focus so much energy into work, especially with my appointments, phone calling and pending business pouring into Saturdays and Sundays, and then I have to go to all these fraternal events on the weekends that relate to my work. The agency I am in is super sales competitive oriented, and when all is said and done, the only peace I find is in riding.

What I've come to find is that racing doesn't bring me peace. It actually kinda stresses me out and I don't have fun - and then it becomes a pain in the ass and then I don't want to do it. I feel I not only waste my time and money, but I waste the guy-who-I-may-finish-ahead-of's time, who may be actually going for the glory. I may just be a roadblock for him and he may be trying real hard to get ahead, when in my mind, I just don't care."

On Saturday, I raced CCCX #1 MTB XC in the Cat3 Category, Mens 35-44. I thought I may have had a fighting chance after two years of riding pretty consistent and breaking nearly all my personal records. In preparation, I planned my rides, had a strict training regimen, went hard and took recovery rides, followed a diet and actually lost 15 pounds. I felt confident and determined that I wasn't going to be a last place finisher this time around.

Well, that was not the case. I came in 3rd to last place.

To and from the race, I drove my friend Brett (Cat2) who actually placed third in his class. He went on to tell me how much he loved racing, and how it "drove" him to do it more and more. The passion he expressed was deep. I, on the other hand, didn't feel that way. It was during Brett's A.D.D.-fueled blabbering that I realized: I have no love for racing. Not like some of these guys do.

I don't know if it is my frustration of being a meat pylon, or if it is my lack of passion for racing, but it is clear after two years of making some valiant attempts of being a bike racer, it truly isn't my thing

Great friends have encouraged me to "keep at it!" and "don't let this get you down, you're gonna get faster!" - but I don't know if I even want to "keep at it" - because all that "training", dieting and commitment to a failed attempt on my part ended up being all in vain. Not only did I walk away with a feeling of disappointment in myself, but now I have developed this strange after-effect of mental burn-out: I simply don't want to ride MTB's. I have no desire to hit the trail.

This is alarming to me, given that I love riding. But bike racing seemed to do the complete opposite to me what it does for other people. For others, the race is what keeps them riding - for me, the race is what makes me want to say "f' it!".

In my November 2010 post, I mentioned my work, and how the mental demand is at an extremely high level. Quite possibly if I had a corporate job where competition was not a factor and it is done at cruising speed with a steady paycheck, I could see racing being a viable option to "get that edge out of me". But, this is not the case. I work in a highly competitive, mentally draining, quota and commission driven sales environment where it is feast or famine. My paycheck is extremely unstable and varying from very low to moderately high with extremely long hours, working into the late hours of the night and most weekends.

I am not making excuses for my failure as a bike racer, but trying to find the source of the complete opposite outcome of my feelings towards it.

I've always been a rebel - never wanting to adhere to things that didn't come as fun to me. There's a reason why I leaned towards BMX and not high school sports; art and not academics (although I was a straight A student). Quite possibly, deep inside on a subconscious level, racing may represent to me a type of structure that I naturally want to go against.

Or maybe, I just suck and don't want to subject myself to future ass-whoopings.

Whatever it may be, this is my last attempt at bike racing. I can't say that won't give it a go in years from now, but as it stands, I'm hanging up my number plate.

I need to shake this lack of desire to MTB ride. In the next few days, I will have to force myself to ride and try to ignite that riding passion I've been able to cling on to for 4 years without ever waining. I am so perplexed of how one bike race could burn me out this bad.

Until next time, my friends. I wish all my fellow Quadzillians GOOD LUCK!

TIRES! Reviews of Four Budget Friendly Forte' Brand Tires from Performance Bike

Again, I have to apologize for not keeping up with my blog. This used to be a place for me to post pictures and give ride reports, but with the advent of Instagram, I've pretty much left my picture posting for there. If you want to follow me, please look me up as "dionridesbikes" - I totally appreciate the follows and especially the comments.

Today I'm going to give you a long overdue review of the Performance brand "Forte'" tires: The Dartmoor, Pisgah, Tsali and Metro. With the exception of the Metro, I've used these in a variety of situations, from racing Sea Otter to pavement use to my local trail jaunts. The Metro is a recent addition, so I'm going to offer my first ride impressions.

Performance Bike re-brands components and accessories under the Forte' name, but from speaking with the employees from the local shop, they say the source of these parts are from a variety of major manufacturers (Kenda was mentioned as being a manufacturer of many of their tires). All of these tires are under $20, which is a great value during these rough economic times.

The Dartmoor

I was initially turned on to the Dartmoor for it's tread pattern. When I was looking at a tire to be used as a rear for Sea Otter, I liked the idea of a fast rolling rear with low treads that would handle well on a hard-packed XC course. Looking closer at the tread pattern, it resembles the Schwalbe Furious Fred tire, claimed by Schwalbe to be the fastest rolling tire they offer; however, the Dartmoor is just 1/5 of the price of a Furious Fred. Unfortunately, after test riding the Sea Otter course, I swapped this out for the Tsali, which are reviewed furthered down.

As suspected, the Dartmoor handles well for the hard-packed situations where the ground is stable; loose pebbles and such will render this tire useless. It rolls fast, and does well at low tire pressures, such as 25PSI. With raised knobs on the side, it corners surprisingly well, but only when the loose gravel is nonexistent. The folding bead version comes in at a wonderfully light 524g (claimed weight), so you weight-weenies out there can sleep well at night.

Currently, these tires are on my vintage KHS Montana Pro. Since I baby my vintage ride a bit, I stick to fire roads and these tires work extremely well for those days on the dirty hills. For anything aggressive, such as all-mountain riding, I would recommend looking for something else. They roll fast with the compromise of no knobby traction.

For a commuter or adventure tire, I would highly recommend this as a choice to consider. For dirt paths and exploration, the Dartmoor offers a great alternative to pavement-specific tires that are difficult to navigate through the dirty stuff.

The Pisgah

I have chosen the Pisgah as a front tire on my On-One 456 Single Speed. It rolls great for a front tire and traction is very good. Coming hard into corners is done with confidence and it is wearing quite well given the conditions have been dry and scratchy; I ride pavement to the trails which probably wears them a bit faster. I have run this tire as low as 23PSI without any pinch flats; claimed weight is at 740g. For a 26 X 2.3 tire, I don't think 740g is too much of a weight disadvantage.

As a rear, I think I would choose something else unless the conditions warrant a heavier knobbied tire. The larger knobs are somewhat resistant to faster rolling, but they are ramped to offer some roll-ability.

The Tsali

For Sea Otter, I ran these both front and back. I am now using this as a rear on my SingleSpeed, and, unfortunately, it has worn very fast. The tread pattern reminds me of an off-road/dirt bike trials tire: knobby enough for some traction, but low, ramped tread for speed. I have mounted these ghetto tubeless without issue, and with inner tubes, I've gone down to lower air pressures without issue.

I like how fast this tire rolls, but the compromise of wear is bothersome. I would love this tread pattern in a compound that lasted a bit longer.

The Metro

I recently installed the 700X35c versions of these tires on a set of 29'er wheels and squeezed onto my Leader 510H frame (26'er frame). My first impressions of these tires have been positive: great feeling compound, light at 430g, rolls fast, comfy, and supple. These are a much better tire than the cheap hybrid tires I had on before. They provide a much better cushion than my previous tires, but roll much better.

I look forward to seeing how well these wear over time. I would recommend these for touring and commuting.

I wanted to offer my impression of these tires in case you had your doubts. These are simply re-branded tires from an array of major manufacturers, and I have trusted them on my local jaunts and even my modest stint at the Sea Otter Classic.

If you are looking for sub-$20 tires that provide great performance, the value of the Forte' line will be hard to beat.

DMR STS Tension Seeker - REVIEW

DMR STS Tension Seeker

I've done quite a few single speed conversions in the last few years, and I've tried a handful of tensioners for vertical dropout bikes: The On-One Doofer, The On-One Other-Doofer and a Surly Singulator. All did the job, but none really did it well.

The On-One Doofer is essentially a stripped down rear derailleur. It tensions the chain by pushing down on the chain and has a spring to allow for some play. The design makes for the set up to have "chain wrap", or more pulleys the chain has to go through. For singlespeed, the most ideal situation is to have the chain line be direct, without much wrap. The On-One Doofer is basic and it works. But, due to the wrap, it isn't the most ideal set-up if you have other options to choose from.

The On-One Other Doofer and the Surly Singulator can be set up in "push up" or "push down" mode (as the On-One Doofer works) to tension the chain. The Other-Doofer works okay, but due to the design, in the more desired mode of "push up", you may have an issue with the guide wheel coming in contact with the chain stay. Some correct this with a half-link (which you can purchase for this reason), or some may just choose to set it up in the push down mode. Also, the wheel guide was not very precise, which also made for a noisy, gritty set-up.

The Surly Singulator was also noisy and gritty in both "push down" and in "push up" mode. The Singulator was tensioned with a spring, so chain slap over very rough areas did occur. Until I purchased the DMR STS  Tension Seeker, I truly believed this was how they all felt... LAME.

Tensioner in "push down" mode
Tensioner in "push up" mode

Ideally, one would want a frame with horizontal (or "track") dropouts for a single speed set-up. Sliding dropout frames work very well, too. But when you're converting a vertical dropout frame, you must tension the chain one way or another*. And, for efficiency, the less chain wrap, the better.

After searching the internet for wisdom, I came across great reviews about the DMR STS Tension Seeker. What really interested me was seeing how many were able to get it to "push up" successfully. Sometimes, with certain gearing combos, the push-up will not work and the wheel guide will hit the chain stay (as mentioned before). But, I decided to order one and give it a try anyway. It couldn't be any worse than what I used before, right? And ultimately, I could always resort to "push-down" mode, if necessary.

Installation was very easy, and with my 34X20 gearing, it works in "push-up" mode perfectly. During my ride, I didn't feel like there was a tensioner there at all; it was so smooth, it felt as if I had horizontal dropouts with a direct chain - no wrap. No noise, buttery smooth, and no dropped chain. The guide wheel has free lateral movement, so how ever your chain line sits on your frame, the guide wheel will adapt.

After being a little frustrated with other tensioners and feeling like mediocre was the best I was going to do, I am glad so many have posted positive reviews about the DMR. It is a tensioner that proves to be solid, works well, and makes you forget you are riding a conversion.

I highly recommend not messing with other tensioners - do it right the first time with a DMR.

*Sheldon Brown has a massive article about single speeds which is pretty extensive and I'd be foolish to try to re-create it myself. If you haven't read from the master, you may click HERE for more information.

NZ FARM JAM READY TO RIP THIS WEEKEND

Conner MacFarlane Front Flipping into the course at last years Farm Jam event

SOME OF THE biggest names in two-wheeled action sports have begun converging on a 2,600-acre farm near Winton in New Zealand’s South Island for the 2013 Farm Jam on Saturday.

Organisers Dan and Brett Frew have been working around the clock to ensure the three freestyle motocross, mountain-bike and BMX dirt jump courses are primed and ready to be hammered by hundreds of pairs of wheels.

Rider and media interest has been at an all-time high for the 2013 edition of the unique action-sports contest, with the organisers still fielding calls and emails from parties interested to either ride or cover the day.

“We’ve been absolutely blown away with the level of interest we’ve received this year,” says Dan Frew. “We’re going to have athletes from the US, Spain, the UK, and a huge contingent from Australia competing against New Zealand’s best riders. We’re very excited to witness the action that goes down on Saturday.”

One of the biggest additions to this year’s contest is Spaniard Andreu Lacondeguy. While he is known as an amazing MTB freerider, Lacondeguy will also compete in the BMX and FMX contests. He will be the first rider in action-sports history to contest all three disciplines.

“It’s going to be amazing to watch Lacondeguy go nuts in all three competitions,” Brett Frew says. “We’ve never had someone cross-over like this and it’s going to create a lot of interest.”

Other high-profile international athletes currently in transit to take on New Zealand’s best riders include three-time X Games BMX champion Corey Bohan, X Games medallist Anthony Napolitan, and Australian FMX legends Matt Schubring and Tyrone Gilks.

The 2013 NZ Farm Jam will be held on Saturday 23 February at 738 Otapiri Gorge Rd, Winton, New Zealand. Gates open at 11am with the action running from 1pm to 6pm.

Entry is $25 for adults and $15 for children between 5 and 12. Family passes (two adults and two children) are available for $60. No glass or dogs are permitted on the property and there will be food and merchandise available at the event.

About the Farm Jam
The Farm Jam began in 2008 on the Frew brothers’ 2,600-acre sheep farm in Otapiri Gorge, Southland, NZ. From its humble beginnings it has rapidly grown into a bucket-list event for two-wheeled action-sports athletes, attracting some of the world’s biggest names in BMX, FMX and MTB. The “jam” formats see each sport judged solely by the riders, with significant emphasis placed on judging riders from other disciplines. Thousands of spectators flock to the highly-anticipated annual event.

Trails 2011

This Photo is from April 2008. This is right before the major transformation of the main line top to bottom. The newly thrown landing you see on the right was the eventual inspiration to shift the line right and make the left hip bigger to line you up for the long jumps down the hill after. Crazy thinking about the amount of dirt that has been moved since this photo and just how shitty everything looks in comparison to today. As you can see by the photos below things are already popping on the old lines. All the new stuff is getting there but still needs some work. Hit me up and get your dig and ride on.

Portland Trip

Some of the locals headed up north for some riding while we have a break in the weather. I didn't get to make it but Dan headed up and documented the shenanegans behind the lens. Beevo for as long as he has lived around here had never ridden Burnside before. Popped that cherry. Burnside and Tigard both were sessioned and Dan got some good pics check them out at Diesel's World here. Sounds like he will post more in the Albums section later after he geeks out, tweaking them in Photoshop.

Is Passion a Learned Behavior?

I've been chipping away at "Bones Brigade: An Autobiography (2012)" for a few nights after I get home from client appointments and my wife goes to bed. I reflect on how these "children" (Tony Hawk, Lance Mountain, Steve Caballero, Rodney Mullen, etc.) excelled to become the highest level skateboarders of the time, all under the age of 18. My mind is blown that these youngsters pioneered every trick you see today, including the vert ollie, the flatland ollie and the McTwist.

I feel a close bond to this time in that 1) during those years, it was a toss-up between me going BMX or Skater (obviously I chose BMX) and 2) I grew up in a hotbed of skateboarding (Santa Cruz, Ca.). I relate to all the things in that video, but I mostly relate to The Stoke.

The Stoke - or what many call "Passion" - is something that seems to tie these young skaters together.

Stories of them crashing, getting up, doing the trick over and over for hours until they nailed it. Tales of Rodney Mullen getting up at 2am in the morning, telling the rest of the boys that he's "going skating" and coming back with dozens of new tricks at dawn.

The drive that these youngsters had was fuel for the fire. Stacey Peralta guided and mentored them, making sure that the fame and money didn't go to their head. He kept them humble and drove the desire to progress.

This leaves me with a question: Is Passion a Learned Behavior?

I'm thinking of my parents, who encouraged and supported me to put my 100% into everything I got into. When I started riding freestyle BMX, they did everything they could to get me what I needed to get better. Same goes with karate, music, etc.

I also think of those who may not have such a supporting family, but have friends and spouses that do the same. It's like they are just as stoked for you (if not more) than you are for yourself... cheering and loving you every step of the way. I still get a gigantic grin whenever I see top-level athletes do the unimaginable, and stand their while fans and friends envelope them in cheers, hugs, arms raised in victory - as if they completed the feat themselves.

Conversely, I think of those who have no passion - for anything. What makes those people so un-passionate? Whether it's riding a bike, surfing, yo-yo or scrapbooking... I have a hard time imagining a life without passion.

They seem to make excuses like "I'm busy" or "no money", etc. but I feel that those are just excuses. I'm as busy and tight on finances as the next person... but nothing gets me more stoked than thinking about my next ride.

What do you guys think? Can you look back and find the source of your passion that keeps you going? Where did you get you get your passionate drive from?

Please leave a comment and lend my your thoughts!

Brian and Gary at Woodward West's Winter Camp!

Gary Young and I just wrapped up 2010 in a big way... at Woodward West's winter camp. This years camp was 3 action packed days with over 130 BMX campers getting free reign on this bike riding paradise. We rode a ton, filmed some clips, played dodgeball, footdown, and tons of other fun stuff. Almost everyone got something free and everyone left with a smile on their face. Ten lucky campers ended up with a $20 gift card to ActionVillage. Some won them because of their BMX skills and some won because of their "paper-rock-scissors" skills. Either way we were glad to play Santa Claus one more time before the end of the year. One camper, Alistair, really needed a new pair of forks, luckily Gary noticed and hooked up with with $20 off his new pair courtesy of Action Village. Stoked!
Thanks again to Woodward West for an amazing week and can't wait to visit again! - Brian Kachinsky
