Bike Riding is just Not Climbing...

For the past year, I've been pondering how and why being a fast climber is the pinnacle of MTB riding and road riding. At least, outside of the loose-jersey DH guys, this seems to be what many are striving for. Many times I've read - and experienced myself - people's "fitness running out of talent"; you know the folks who haul ass uphill just to white knuckle and on brake a descend? I also understand people's fear and risk trade-off's - although with some focus on skillful descending, many (if not most) people can overcome this.

A lot of people talk about working on their fitness for climbing - and granted, most of us can use that sort of focus. Myself, I've been trying to get faster on climbs for the past 5 years (since I started MTB'ing seriously). However, why not take a few rides out of the week to focus on downhill skills, cornering, obstacles and flow? These skills, at least in my Cat3 point of view, are equally as valuable to being a great climber.

I appreciate it when I see fast riders at the top of Strava on both uphills and downhills - but also find it strange to see fast climbers WAY behind me on DH segments. I ask: What happened there? Even though I get smoked at races, it amazes me how much faster riders will hold me up on the downhill sections.

People use the old clich: "Races are won on the climbs..." - but what good is that if you're not racing?

I get that many people ride for many reasons - and some people will just huddle-up to their strengths. My strength is downhill, technical and flow (God Bless BMX) - so I work on my climbing to try and balance my riding... but I still work on my downhill a LOT. Not only is it fun, but to me, it makes sense to be a well-rounded rider.

Now that I got that off my chest, here's Chad Degroot's segment from Baco 10...

KYLE BALDOCK ? LIFE IS GOLDEN

kyle baldock x games

UNIT BMX rider Kyle Baldock stamped his name in X Games folklore history over the weekend in Foz Do Iguaçu, Brazil, by becoming one of the few athletes ever to win two gold medals at the prestigious world-series action sports event. On his return to Aussie shores we sat down with the new X Game Dirt and Park champion to talk about his wins, the struggles he faced beforehand, and what he learned from riding against the best BMX riders on the planet.

Kyle, congratulations on the double gold haul at X Games Foz, what’s the secret behind the wins: Ha, thanks, good question. I kind of relate it to my early days in BMX when you’d rock up to a comp with the shittiest bike and gear, you don’t really care, and you end up doing well because you’re just focused on your riding and not making excuses because everything’s not perfect. I think at X I just found that happy place, like when you start to expect everything has to be perfect, from the course to bike, etc, you start to lose what’s real and you blame every little thing that goes wrong with your equipment, when in reality all your competitors have to ride the same course and the winner is usually the person who removes himself from making excuses for the way he is riding and is 100 per cent in the zone and enjoying what he does best.

kyle baldock x games
Kyle Baldock on his way to winning his second gold medal in BMX Dirt. Photo: Nick Pescetto/UNIT

Heading into X Game Foz you were struggling with a wrist injury and the concussion you sustained at Simple Session, how did you cope: During practice I was really struggling with the Park course until the last day; I couldn’t do anything, couldn’t physically trick the Box, just wasn’t dialing in the course. As for my wrists I just rode through it, although I did two runs in a row and landed a little flat and it smashed me, then I took a step back and remembered what my girl Honey told me before leaving for Brazil, which was to take the time to study what the other riders were doing and what tricks where, and ride smart instead of just trying to huck the biggest tricks on certain parts of the course, like I did in X Games L.A 2012. This time I didn’t make the same mistake and I also worked on changing my runs every time, which helped.

Then you backed it up in Dirt, talk us through that: Right after finishing Park I got swamped with interviews for ESPN, which is part of the deal with winning gold, but it gave me little time to prepare for the Dirt contest next up. In my first run I did a Flip Bar No Hander over the first set, then a 450 Bar and a Seven No Hander at the end, and got an 88.33. Personally I thought this was my best run because I’d never done a Seven No Hander in competition before, and I was super stoked I pulled it first go, but it didn’t score that high. My next run I tried a different approach and it worked in my favour and scored a 92, and set the mood for the rest of my runs and the rest is history.

 kyle baldock
Kyle with second placed finisher in Park Pat Casey. Photo: Nick Pescetto/UNIT

How was the Brazilian crowd: The crowd filled the stands for Dirt more than any other sport and they went nuts at the end of every run. They want your helmet, gloves, signature, it was crazy! When I talked to ESPN I was like, ‘You have to bring back dirt in X GAMES forever!’

What was the reaction like after you won your second gold medal, and what did you learn from the event: Everyone surrounded me after my final run in Dirt and rider’s I’ve looked up to for years were congratulating me and giving me props on my runs. It was so cool as I later found out the last person to win double gold at X Games was Kevin Robinson in 2006. The biggest thing I learned at this X Games was I need to work on my fitness more, spend more time swimming in the pool to build up my cardio. I was a lot better in Park this year compared to last, but it was so hot and a lot of riders really struggled. I know I can do all the tricks, but pumping in and out of the bowls is really hard on your legs and body so I want to make sure I’m on top of my fitness for future events to make sure I can pull all of my big tricks on tap.

When did the fact you won two gold medals sink in: Everything happened so fast it didn’t hit me until I was doing an interview a while after the Dirt comp for ESPN. It’s like winning the first gold was amazing, then the second felt surreal, like a smack in the face; is this a dream? Getting those two gold medals helps you understand winning, gives you that deep belief in yourself you can do it again.

First Impressions of the On-One Fleegle Bar

Two and a half years ago, I wrote a review of the On-One Mary Bars. In that review, I criticized the width of the On-One Mary bar, stating that they were a bit narrow at 645mm. And, with the extreme bend, the width accentuated the narrowness that much more. I sold those handlebars with a bike, so I had the opportunity to try them out, however, I don't think I would've kept them long before switching back to standard risers.

Transforming (once again) my Leader 510H into an urban/commuter style bike, I decided to go with an alternative handlebar with a pleasant bend. I know I didn't want to go with a Mary bar again (because of the width), so I sought out my options. And, after some internet digging, I came to discover On-One came through again with their Fleegle handlebar for only $21!

The Fleegle appeared to have all the features of Mary, only at a much wider stance of ~720mm - just what I was looking for.

I first impressions were:

  • Perfect width - much better than the Mary
  • Very cool graphic that indicates the center of the handlebar
  • Less extreme bend puts less tension on the elbows and shoulders
  • Bends right where I want it
On-One specifications:
  • 15 deg back sweep
  • 20mm forward offset - to negate the "stem shortening" effect of the big back sweep
  • 105mm straight centre section - for clamping lights and stuff on in the middle
  • 716.7mm width - designed to be cut down as you wish

Flat out land speed was neutral. The Fleegle bar sits very comfortably roaming around flat sections, but, for obvious reasons, has no aero properties whatsoever. Lifting the front wheel posed no problems to get up-on-top of curbs, so I can't imagine dirt riding with the Fleegle would be problematic. Descending was as fast as it was going to be on the road without drops - however, for a comfortable commute, I wouldn't see this being an issue.

The real impressive feature of this handlebar was standing and mashing hills.

The Leader is set-up 1X8 @ 36T X 11-30 with 29'er wheels, wrapped in 700X35c commute tires, stuffed onto a 26" frame. For some of the steeper climbs, there are sections I had to stand and mash up. Standing up, the hand position felt perfect. To me, this indicates is that the Fleegle would be a great singlespeed handlebar - the bar just about "came alive" when I stood up to climb.

My first impressions of the Fleegle bar is that it is a step up from the Mary bar. In all aspects, from fit, width, feel, and looks, the Fleegle outshines the Mary in all aspects.

A Message From Chris Doyle

It's been a while since I've sent something in for the blog.  I pretty much sat around all winter healing from ankle surgery.  So, I'm happy to report that I'm back on the bike and back on the road.  I just returned home from Iraq where I was doing demo's for the troops.  It was an unbelievable experience to say the least!  You can tell that the troops don't get much of a 'thanks' or a break from the norm so it felt great to give them a little show and a little break from their daily routines!  Attached are a few photos...

Best,
Chris

Nyjah Huston Wins Street League Gold X Games Foz Do Iguacu

Congratulations to Nyjah Huston who continues to dominate Street League and appears simply unstoppable with his gold medal finish today at Street League?s debut at the X Games. In front of a huge crowd of screaming Brazilian fans, Huston yet again delivered a mind-blowing barrage of technical skating and rolled away with another victory. Huston?s win is no surprise considering his competition history as the 2012 Street League Skateboarding Champion, his continued authority on the Street Leaguetour from its inception in 2010, and his X Games Los Angeles Skateboard Street Gold medal in 2012, a winning streak that is quickly making him the most dominant competitive skater in the history of the sport. He has also collected more prize money than any skateboarder in history. On Friday Huston easily qualified first for today?s final and came into the event ready to win. It was definitely a heated competition in true form where he wasn?t at the top spot throughout the entire competition going head to head with the competitors, but sealed the lead in the final Impact Section where he landed a backside 270 lipslide, cab lipslide, 360 flip to lipslide and kickflip backside lipslide finishing nearly 10 points ahead [...]

Day one

So the crew is Shad Johnson, Chester Blacksmith, Jeremy Davis, Riley Peetz, Eric Jenson, Joe Lumina, Anthony Tanglin, Andy McIntosh, Marcus Walter and Frank Walter. All of us crammed in the big ass rental van. The vans pretty dialed we have TV, and a PS2 so bmx videos and video games fill in the boredom of the drive. Left my house around 9:30 and made first stop in Myrtle Creek to ride the park. Fun session, nothing to heavy going down but the good weather made things really nice. Got Marcus and Andy to carve over the tunnel opening after some heckling. Marcus got our heart rates up on his first try not quite making it and hopping in the last part and clipped rear wheel and blew off the pedals. By the time we left he had it on lock. Next stop was Talent after a crappy lunch at DQ. Road trip diet. Talent used to seem so big but with all the new parks that are so much bigger it felt small now. 5 years can really change your perspective. Still another fun session in shorts and a t-shirt. Dialed. Andy and I were joking about not knowing how many In and Out burgers were between Eugene and Woodward but traveling with Shad we would find out. First one was in Redding our last stop before arriving at the Solid Bikes warehouse in Sacremento around 2 am to crash on the floor. Big thanks to Aaron Huff for free lodging. Next stop is Fresno bike park and onto Woodward.

In case you had any doubts...

Yeah it's been quite a while but we still here. Not a whole lot going on with all the wet weather. Impatiently waiting for the AARP bmx jam down at camp Woodward West the first weekend of April. Stoked. I went last year but since then they have added quite a bit of new terrain, so looking forward to checking it out and getting in a solid weekend of riding. And to keep the theme going here, if you had any doubts that Shad has his finger firmly planted on the pulse of BMX... He managed to somehow find the picture below of me at last weekends Redline Cup qualifier racing in the 30+ open MONEY class. My fat ass couldn't pedal fast enough to keep up with the big wheelers and didn't even make the main. I did have fun though making them nervous diving to the inside in the first corner. Click on over to Goods online store and buy something. Support those who support the sport. Shad's been doing that for the nearly 20 years I've known him and even before that. Also check out James Thrash's photobucket for more Oregon racing photos.

the "TRIP" concluded

After lunch the MegaRamp was opened up for sessioning. Most people headed up on the hill to at least watch what went down. After filling out a seven page waiver you could set foot on the massive new structure. Safety was a big concern and those that looked too squirrelly were cut off. Boozedawg was one of those booted after blowing off the pedals on a sketchy attempt. Shad gave it a few tries but decided it wasn't for him and was content to watch. My first run at it I think I was almost half way up the roll in. I wasn't sure how the lip was going to feel and wanted to feel it out. It felt good and so on following runs I slowly worked my way higher till I was landing on the top right before the "box" started angling to the landing. Shea Nyquist was the first person to clear it after pedaling about six times down the roll in. He overshot by quit a bit, but it was then I realized I would have to pedal at it to make it. Lance Mosley wasn't down with tagging so he went for it first try and got bucked by the lip and ejected. After seeing him, Matt Mardesetch, and Ryan Nyquist bail it was even harder not to be nervous. I tried not to look down the roll in too much while waiting my turn and on my next try I took three pedals thinking it would be enough to clear but not overshoot. Wrong! I cleared the flat on top for the first time but hit a small slant a bit over a bike length long before the landing and then bounced a ways down the landing. Oooooohs from the crowd watching and an increased heart rate. Scary! I was determined not to let the opportunity pass me by to do this and headed back up for another go. More pedals this time and I made it to the landing but pitched forward a bit too much and landed foot down. More OOOooohs and heart pounding! Next go I stuck it clean and was content to call it quits. All and all there were about seven people, including myself,f that cleared it. Check that off my bucket list! I headed back to down the hill to ride with Marcus and missed all the big tricks. Mosley flipped it, Birdwell superman seat-grabbed it, and Ryan Nyquist 360'd it.

Not sure who took this pic but you can check out more here.

Damn that looks big! Cell photo Scott Hagnas.

The rest of the day we spent riding ourselves into exhaustion. Riley worked on some backflips and got some on the resi ramp. I finally sacked up and 360'd the box jump. I was probably more stoked on that then the MegaRamp. It's something I should do without hesitation but over the past few years my confidence with spinning has been at an all time low. Thanks Woodward for the confidence boost.

After the session ended there was an after party in the lodge. Free food, free beer and bmxers is always a great recipe for good times. Dave Nourie, Anthony, and a couple other flatlander's put on a show in the bar. Dave is quite the showman. When the two kegs ran dry and the bar closed up a group of us moved on to one of the rooms. The room stay was short lived after the occupants realized that if they wanted their room to be inhabitable, the party better continue elsewhere. The whole first floor of the lodge was awoken by everyone looking for someone else's room to wreck. I don't think a door or window was missed by someone banging on it. No more party animals, so we hung out in the parking lot where Jeremy and Boozedawg kept us laughing with their drunken antics. Ben Ward gave me another reason not to have a facebook by posting pics of Jeremy DRUNK on his, resulting in an angry voicemail from the wife wondering why he wouldn't answer the phone when she called to check on him. Too funny. How no one knocked one out Boozedawg is beyond me. He was sac tapping or thumb in the bumming everyone within reach. Quite a few people will remember him after that night for sure! Needless to say we didn't make it up and get on the road by eight as was "planned". We left Woodward around 11 am. The Portland bunch of the crew got home around 5 am the next morning. Quite an unforgettable road trip. Check out the pics below and links for more event coverage.
