Nice Weather + Good Session = Great Photos

Dan hit me up Saturday about wanting to shoot some photos at the park in the morning. I met up with him at 10 the next morning, he was the only one at the park. I had to laugh at him and remind him most BMXer's don't get up that early on a weekday let alone the weekend. The weather was awesome for a January day and quit a few locals rolled in for a good session. Dan clicked away capturing the action and yelled his critiques when the tricks didn't match his expectations for his photos. Couple pics to sample below but be sure to check out his site to see the rest here.

WeActivist Arto Saari: A Modern Retrospect Part 2!

WE Superlative Company is one of the most progressive apparel brands around. I find only CROSS COLORS and CAVARICCI?S more daring and with more moxie. But one thing that WESC does that the others don?t is build a collective group known as the WE ACTIVISTS. They sponsor and support artists coming from all walks of life. Skaters, snowboarders, surfers, and the best of all, DJ?S. So whenever they come together to support one of their Activists, all the stars come out. Part two of WeActivist Arto Saari’s conversation with fellow Activist Chris Pastras covers his temporary departure from Flip skateboards to Alien Workshop. There he filmed his “Mindfield” part while recovering from major knee surgery before returning back home to Flip. The two also discuss Arto’s deep passion for Photography, the lost art of film, and end the day with a session in Arto’s backyard bowl. Team Social Pace DerpDey Ride

Opening up my posts with "Man, I haven't posted here in awhile..." seems redundant at this point. I feel like I've started my last 5 posts like that - but it's true. Life gets crazy busy, work, holidays, riding, etc. But mostly work for me.

This week-in-blog won't be complete without a full and fair report about my DerpDey (birthday) Ride that we had on March 24th. The idea was to not really celebrate my birthday, per se, but to celebrate riding stupid bikes. I wanted everybody to try their best to leave behind their carbon fiber, 11sp, 19lb. race bike, and unhang that weird, old, steel, klunker of a MTB from the rafter. Unfortunately, not everybody has such a steed - so, it turned into a "brung what'cha rung" ride.

We all showed up at the usual spot. Some brought some Derp bikes - most notably - Pmarshall's WWII skiptooth beach cruiser. Pics are below for proof, and it was definitely derpy. Later on that day, other riders were saying things, like, "Wow, we've seen some weird bikes today... some crazy dude was on a beach cruiser!". Robert brought his sweet fat bike with a modified lefty fork, Brett had his fat bike; Chris on his CX bike, etc. We climbed Rocky Ridge and had shots and beer at the top.

There were countless pinch flats on this ride - it got so bad, that the group started to run out of spare tubes. Chris locked his keys in his truck. When we asked why didn't he just call his wife, he said he locked his phone in there, too. He was drunk off warm beer and sitting in the dirt like a homeless guy when we found him. TJ and Brett crashed, but in Brett-like fashion, he - filled with beer and shots - went out to try and crush some Strava segments.

It was hot, people got sunburned, but the reports back indicated that this was the most fun, hilarious ride the guys have been on in a long time. This wasn't even about MTB'ing - it was about being with friends - and I must say - this was the best birthday with friends I've had in years. Thank you all for coming out and spending the day together. You guys are worth more than gold to me - and without getting all sappy, I am extremely grateful for such friends.

Welcome to the Team: Joel Pierazek

The Basics
Name: Joel Pierazek
Age: 24
Hometown: St. Pete Florida
Resides: Orlando Florida
Year started bmx and why: around 2000, I wanted this all chrome Mongoose at Wal-Mart, just to be
cool?. But then I saw Mike Aitken doing this huge unlookback on a RideBMX cover. I bought it and was like "this is cool!! I wanna do this."

Fill in the Blanks
Being a part of the Action Village team means that there is someone there that can help me out, and I
can put their name behind things I do? which will help both of us.

The first thing I did when I found out I got sponsored was call my best friend Nick Mahoney.

Thecomeupbmx.net is my favorite website besides ActionVillage.com; it?s pretty much like CNN news, but a little more relevant to life... Haha

I would pretty much do anything for 100 dollars? I?m pretty short on rent lately

My favorite pros are probably about the same as everyone else?s: Sean Sexton, Chris Doyle, Nathan
Williams, Chase D, you know?

May favorite bike spot is pretty much anywhere; as long as we aren?t getting kicked out, and my friends
and I can just have a good session and sit around and talk shit, I?m having fun.

Everyone should take time to just relax, and not be so serious about everything. For me I like going out
and road biking around town just chillin.

My favorite thing besides BMX is a good combination of girls, music and partyin? haha

The last person I called was My friend Levi, to see if he wanted to go riding today.

The best advice I ever got was probably, not to be a lurk

Cycling and the Case of a Sleep Disorder

Since my 20's, I have snored.

Growing up, my Dad snored awfully (I mean, really bad) and I am told my brother snores (I don't know if it's true, but so my Dad tells me).

Over the years I have been an intense coffee drinker for reasons other than I just love the taste of coffee.  I have used it as a hard drug, and when epinephrine was legal (meth's cousin), I even took that. It is awful to think that you "need" something like caffeine, but in my case I did. Since college, I have always been rushing around - and since my late 20's with my insurance career, I am constantly on the go, hustling... meeting clients and trying to make a dime here and there. I usually start work at 6:00am - 7:00am, and usually come home from seeing my last client at 10:00pm. I work my riding in my schedule in the early afternoons. This is an extremely busy life that I have grown accustomed to.

I am now coming on 38yrs. old and, until recently, I felt like this life was wearing on me. I was extremely depressed - the most depressed I have ever been in my life - and riding felt more like a chore than a passion. I started to despise my job, the financial/career choices I've made, and I started to question my place in life. This was unlike me.

We had a death in the family and I had to put down my beloved dog, Rocky

Thank goodness I have a great wife, an awesome family, and some great riding friends... life could have ended and I wouldn't have cared. I am usually a positive person - but a rain of negativity started to fill my head. My riding and my job performance suffered and declined rapidly.

Accompanied with the depression was extreme fatigue. Dizziness, tiredness, and the constant feeling that I needed to nap. I would go out to ride, and felt like collapsing and sleeping right there on the trail. I would use caffeine to try and stay awake, but that didn't help. This compounded the problem, because when I got home from a ride, I would want to nap, but couldn't due to the caffeine.

In August, I met with my doctor to discuss my health and my blood pressure (which is high and I take a medication for). I started to tell him what I was experiencing, and without hesitation, he says "You sound like a classic case of sleep apnea..."

I've heard of this, and even witnessed an awful case when I had to room up with another insurance agent while traveling. He snored so much, I had to use ear plugs, and he would get up out of bed very often due to - what sounded like - him choking. It was horrible to witness and I couldn't imagine how it would be to live like that. The sleep deprivation would make life extremely difficult to bear.

After my doctor told me that I may have a sleep disorder, everything I was feeling started to make sense. Lack of drive, depression, high blood pressure, constant fatigue and tiredness, etc. So, I made an appointment with a specialist and soon after got my CPAP machine to treat my apnea.

They found that I stopped breathing 22 times per hour. I had asked him if this was a weight issue, and he said it wasn't (I'm not obese). He said that it was my tongue falling and blocking my airway as I entered REM state. Therefore, I was never able to achieve a deep sleep. Essentially, I was choking myself awake!

I have been using my machine for exactly 30 days, and everything - I mean EVERYTHING - has changed. Depression has gone away, I am no longer sleepy (unless it's from working too hard), job performance has improved, and notably, my athletic performance has improved. My blood pressure reduced, and I may even be able to get off my medication.

Since this is my bike blog, let's talk athletic performance.

August was my first full month of using Strava. That month I logged:

September, I logged:

October, I logged:

November was my first full month of using my CPAP machine. This is a result of getting a full night's sleep, going into sleep R.E.M. mode and waking up refreshed. This was also without the aid of caffeine, energy drinks or any other stimulant:

Out of all four months, I had the least activities, but yet shattered ALL my personal records. I don't believe this is luck, diet, or some sort of "go get 'em" mentality change. There really is only one difference, and that is the treatment of my sleep disorder!

I am a much happier camper now. My outlook is way more positive, work is picking up, and things are changing for the better. 2012 was an incredibly tough year for us, but I'm glad I got this taken care of.

The lesson I wanted to share with you internet'ers is - go to the doctor for your regular check ups. Get blood work done with a full physical. Don't wait until you feel bad or sick, and ask him/her questions. This simple CPAP machine gave me a much more higher quality of life - on and off the bike.

Trails 2011

This Photo is from April 2008. This is right before the major transformation of the main line top to bottom. The newly thrown landing you see on the right was the eventual inspiration to shift the line right and make the left hip bigger to line you up for the long jumps down the hill after. Crazy thinking about the amount of dirt that has been moved since this photo and just how shitty everything looks in comparison to today. As you can see by the photos below things are already popping on the old lines. All the new stuff is getting there but still needs some work. Hit me up and get your dig and ride on.

The Saga Continues... (day 3 part 1)

This is where the Flashback goes in our story.

Back to that Hoffman Bikes ad with Mat blasting 20 Ft on that huge quarter. Back to watching the Big Air event debut in the X games, with the current MegaRamp, and half jokingly saying "I wanna jump that!". I never expected to ever even have a remote opportunity to try it. I was taking my full face helmet to Woodward West just in case. Planning out this trip I told Shad I really wanted to at least give it a go. Shad thought there was no way they were even going to let us on it. I hoped he was wrong. I told Riley thinking maybe he would be down to try it.
"You're calling out the MEGARAMP?"
"No, just saying I really want to check it out. It's a box jump."
"But it's the Fucking MEGARAMP dude!"
Wednesday, before his transformation into Boozedawg, Andy called me to let me know they were opening up the MegaRamp on Saturday between 1 and 4 p.m. He of all people was down to try. Thursday when the crew rolled in Shad was excited about it too, but made it clear he wanted to take runs at the quarter but at least wanted to try since it was a box jump. Riley just laughed at us and said we would see when we got there.
"It's the fucking MEGARAMP!"

Friday night after checking in Captain Cradle was beat and called it a night. Fresno wore him out enough to quit thinking about riding Woodward for the first time in the morning. Boozedawg, unchecked, spreads his brand of havoc upon the lodge.

Ran into this guy on the way to our room.

I was in the lodge bar with Eric and Jeremy trying to catch up with Ben Ward when Shad waved me over. He was talking to Woodward resident pro, Coco Zurita, about the MegaRamp. Coco told us in his Chilean accent that the biggest thing to overcome was the long ride down the roll in to the lip. So much time to get in your head and blow your confidence. You're going so fast downhill on skatelite that there is no way to really back out once you get going and the long approach allows for plenty of time for doubt. Stay confident, stay relaxed, no quick or panicked movements. No problem. Sounds good for something I have still yet to see in person.

In the morning Riley made sure Mac's bike was unpacked and reassembled and woke us up so Mac could get down to the park early. Most of the crew was up and pumped up Captain Cradle to give Boozedawg yet another run for his money. We had about a 50/50 split on those who had been before and those who had not. I got to see what I must have looked like rolling into Woodward for the first time. Screw Disneyland, for my money Woodward is the happiest place on earth.

The morning session most of us took it fairly easy, nibbling around loosening up, trying to make sure our old tired bones would make it through the day. Anthony and Joe headed for the Art Park in the Hanger to ride Flatland with the rest of the old scuffers. Shad, Pizza, and ODB sessioned the new Backyard mini. Last year it was still under construction. I was surprised to find myself sessioning the Enterprise with the Captain and having fun. Last year it had confused and frustrated me and I borderline hated it. The difference a year makes. From there I also finally got a glimpse on the hillside of the other major addition since last year.

to be continued...

A Message From Chris Doyle

It's been a while since I've sent something in for the blog.  I pretty much sat around all winter healing from ankle surgery.  So, I'm happy to report that I'm back on the bike and back on the road.  I just returned home from Iraq where I was doing demo's for the troops.  It was an unbelievable experience to say the least!  You can tell that the troops don't get much of a 'thanks' or a break from the norm so it felt great to give them a little show and a little break from their daily routines!  Attached are a few photos...

Best,
Chris

Giddy as a school girl!

Today is the day! Impatiently waiting on Shad and the van full of the rest of the crew to pick us up. Headed on down to Woodward West for the Old guy jam. Not sure 100% who all is rolling down with us in the van. Some people were maybe going maybe not. Guess when they show I'll know and post a list of old fools rolling down. Should be a blast. Hitting a few parks, Myrtle Creek, Talent, and Ashland, on the way down. Guess the plan is stay with Solid Bikes tonight and get up early hit the bike park in Fresno Friday morning and on to Woodward. Stoked. For all of you not making it, sorry so sad, I'll keep you posted on the trip over the next few days.

NZ FARM JAM READY TO RIP THIS WEEKEND

Conner MacFarlane Front Flipping into the course at last years Farm Jam event

SOME OF THE biggest names in two-wheeled action sports have begun converging on a 2,600-acre farm near Winton in New Zealand’s South Island for the 2013 Farm Jam on Saturday.

Organisers Dan and Brett Frew have been working around the clock to ensure the three freestyle motocross, mountain-bike and BMX dirt jump courses are primed and ready to be hammered by hundreds of pairs of wheels.

Rider and media interest has been at an all-time high for the 2013 edition of the unique action-sports contest, with the organisers still fielding calls and emails from parties interested to either ride or cover the day.

“We’ve been absolutely blown away with the level of interest we’ve received this year,” says Dan Frew. “We’re going to have athletes from the US, Spain, the UK, and a huge contingent from Australia competing against New Zealand’s best riders. We’re very excited to witness the action that goes down on Saturday.”

andreu lacondeguy
UNIT rider Andreu Lacondeguy is keen to go big on the dirt hits at NZ's Farm Jam

One of the biggest additions to this year’s contest is Spaniard Andreu Lacondeguy. While he is known as an amazing MTB freerider, Lacondeguy will also compete in the BMX and FMX contests. He will be the first rider in action-sports history to contest all three disciplines.

“It’s going to be amazing to watch Lacondeguy go nuts in all three competitions,” Brett Frew says. “We’ve never had someone cross-over like this and it’s going to create a lot of interest.”

Other high-profile international athletes currently in transit to take on New Zealand’s best riders include three-time X Games BMX champion Corey Bohan, X Games medallist Anthony Napolitan, and Australian FMX legends Matt Schubring and Tyrone Gilks.

corey bohan
Current X Games champion Corey Boahn will make his first appearance at Farm Jam in 2013

The 2013 NZ Farm Jam will be held on Saturday 23 February at 738 Otapiri Gorge Rd, Winton, New Zealand. Gates open at 11am with the action running from 1pm to 6pm.

Entry is $25 for adults and $15 for children between 5 and 12. Family passes (two adults and two children) are available for $60. No glass or dogs are permitted on the property and there will be food and merchandise available at the event.

For more information and updates, “Like” Southern Freeriders and Farm Jam 2013 on Facebook or visit www.southernfreeriders.blogspot.com

About the Farm Jam
The Farm Jam began in 2008 on the Frew brothers’ 2,600-acre sheep farm in Otapiri Gorge, Southland, NZ. From its humble beginnings it has rapidly grown into a bucket-list event for two-wheeled action-sports athletes, attracting some of the world’s biggest names in BMX, FMX and MTB. The “jam” formats see each sport judged solely by the riders, with significant emphasis placed on judging riders from other disciplines. Thousands of spectators flock to the highly-anticipated annual event.

Bad news, good news

Harvest trails in their prime.

Harvest today.

As so often happens with trail spots Harvest trails are no more. This was the third and best effort for trails in this location but once again met the same fate as the previous attempts. Always a bummer to see so much time and hard labor go down in just a few hours. On a happier note, the trails we do still have are getting more lines dialed in. Our favorite San Diego transplants were out dialing in the new over/under. Paul takes the over while Garret and his newly healed(?) elbow takes the under. Thanks to Tex Diesel for the photos.
