SCHUIE DOMINATES UNIT FMX INVITATIONAL

Unit invitational

Queensland freestyle motocross legend Matt Schubring proved he’s still one of the best FMX riders in the country after claiming victory at the Unit Invitational round of the Australian FMX Championships (AFMXC) at his home compound at Boonah, Qld, on Saturday.

Schubring, who pulled double-duty by both organising and competing at the event, was at his stylish best around the technical course, as he threw each trick perfectly in front of a 1,000-strong crowd. “It’s been a big month and I didn’t get as much ride-time as the other boys; I was busy building the course as well as organising and promoting an event, but I’m stoked on how everything went today,” a beaming Schubring said afterwards.

“The competition was tough and a lot of guys have stepped up. There was a bit of wind out there, but everyone dealt with it and did what they had to do.”

Schubring’s day was made slightly easier after early championship leader Joel Brown had a big mishap during qualifying that saw him fall 30ft onto his heels. Despite barely being able to walk on the suspected fractured limbs, Brown gritted his teeth and rode hard to make the final three and keep his championship hopes alive. “It was a hard day at the office, that’s for sure,” Brown mused. “I hit neutral through the double-double section and I took the impact on my heels. My main concern was to gain enough points for the series, so after two runs where I tried to keep as much pressure off my heels as possible, I was content to place third and opted out of the top three showdown.”

From left Callum Shaw, Schuie and Browny celebrate after an epic battle.

Second overall for the day was current Underground Championship leader Callum Shaw, who has spent a lot of time riding with Schubring after recently buying his “Schuieville” property. “I’m pretty pumped to finish second today,” Shaw said afterwards. “At the previous round at Coonabarabran I finished fourth and set myself a goal to get on the podium here. It feels great to have this first podium under the belt; owning Schuie’s old place has been a big benefit for my riding.”

Victoria’s Ryan Brown impressed many with his big, clean tricks on his way to fourth place, while Gold Coaster Pete Anderson rounded out the top five with his signature smooth style.

The fourth and final round of the AFMXC, the Precise Open, will be held at Mackay, Qld on October 19.

Diary of a Halfpacker - Day 1

A few month back Prasheel Gopal asked me about starting a new diary to learn Halfpacker. There have been many challenges so far. The biggest one being time. I don't have as much time as I used to but I am going to start this journey and thanks to Prasheel I am going to focus on a trick I have wanted to do for some time now. The next one I will post will show progression!

What is My Legacy?

This is going to be a somewhat obscure post, but it does relate to bicycle riding. I don't have any product reviews, posts about new builds or new events I've attended to blabber about (well, I do, but that will be later) - but the legacy question is something I've been pondering lately and thought it would be cathartic to put into outer-space.

So, if you don't like such things... I don't mind if you just X-out this tab and move on to MTBR or The Come Up (I don't blame you), but if you're interested, please make yourself comfortable and help me dig a little.

I am 1 1/2 years shy of my 40th birthday. While for some, that may be considered "young" I truly I thought I'd be in a different place by now. I mean, career is going well, I'm married, etc., etc., but one of the things I thought I'd definitely be by now is a Dad. There are certain things (medically) with me that reduces (to nearly zero) the chance of ever being able to conceive a child with my wife. Adoption is financially prohibitive.

To me, being a husband and a father is the ultimate sacrifice a man can give. I have the utmost respect for all my friends who balance play, work and fatherly duties. These men, if all goes well, will leave behind a legacy. Big or small - it is still a legacy. Their name, their memory... will continue on. Sure, there are douchebags out there - but let's put it into perspective - most men who are fathers want to do the best they can to provide.

So, I ask the question: How will I be remembered when I am gone? What will be my legacy? Will I have left any lasting impression on this world for the positive? Was I a good man? A good person to others? Was I a good husband?

When we die, there are two numbers: your birth date and your death date... with a "-" in between. That "-" represents everything you were during your life. So, I will ask myself, when the time comes: Did I make that "-" count?

Bike riding has become such an integral part of my life it is where I place my identity. Many men my age will talk about their work, career, family... I talk about bikes. BMX and MTB's are my true passions - these are the activities that keep me drooling over the thought of the upcoming weekend on a Monday morning. It's what I talk about with my friends, my family, coworkers... I probably can get pretty annoying with it (I apologize to my wife!).

Ultimately, me doing something on my bike isn't what drives me. Rather, it is the trials and tribulations of other riders that inspire me to want to keep going with it. I want to be there when they shine.

Nothing gets me more amped than my friends getting on podiums at races, a fellow BMX'er doing a trick that we all thought was impossible or hitting an obstacle that is frightening to most. Seeing somebody overcoming obesity or soldiers healing themselves through the therapeutic act of pedaling a bike.

I love it when I see somebody crest over a hill they thought was going to kill them, or seeing children progress on 18" BMX bikes in 2 years what took us 8 back in the day.

I love it when I see my wife get PR's and the occasional QOM's on Strava. She pedals her ass off. I'm so proud of her.

Watching companies and bike shops not only survive, but succeed. See innovations come out that solves problems.

Seeing the most incredible pieces of bike related digital film and artwork for free. All the heart, sweat and passion into projects and edits done - for the labor of love for bikes.

I love the groms. The crack me up and they remind me when I was a young BMX'er with nowhere to go but up. These boys and girls are the future superstars.

I love hugging my friends when they do well, sharing a brew or even a puff. I love the handshake-fist-bump acquaintances I've met along the way and all you on the web who have interacted with me through picture sharing and forums.

To most, I am an internet ghost, Instagram goof and blogger - and most likely we will never meet in person. But to those who I get to spend those bright days and dark nights, spinning wheels, grinding ledges, jumping things, mashing trails and and falling down to do it over - I can only hope this will be my legacy - as I really have nothing else to offer but my passion for bikes and for the people that ride them. The connections we've made are all very dear to me.

I will probably be cursed with a very long life (longevity runs in my family), but before those years add up and creep in, and my ability to pedal a bike, do a BMX trick or rail singletrack is gone, I feel I needed to put this into cyberspace while it was weighing so deeply on me.

Thank you all for sharing the passion with me. You are the reason why I ride.

Some of the locals headed up north for some riding while we have a break in the weather. I didn't get to make it but Dan headed up and documented the shenanegans behind the lens. Beevo for as long as he has lived around here had never ridden Burnside before. Popped that cherry. Burnside and Tigard both were sessioned and Dan got some good pics check them out at Diesel's World here. Sounds like he will post more in the Albums section later after he geeks out, tweaking them in Photoshop.

Brian and Gary at Woodward West's Winter Camp!

Gary Young and I just wrapped up 2010 in a big way... at Woodward West's winter camp. This years camp was 3 action packed days with over 130 BMX campers getting free reign on this bike riding paradise. We rode a ton, filmed some clips, played dodgeball, footdown, and tons of other fun stuff. Almost everyone got something free and everyone left with a smile on their face. Ten lucky campers ended up with a $20 gift card to ActionVillage. Some won them because of their BMX skills and some won because of their "paper-rock-scissors" skills. Either way we were glad to play Santa Claus one more time before the end of the year. One camper, Alistair, really needed a new pair of forks, luckily Gary noticed and hooked up with with $20 off his new pair courtesy of Action Village. Stoked!
Thanks again to Woodward West for an amazing week and can't wait to visit again! - Brian Kachinsky

Giddy as a school girl!

Today is the day! Impatiently waiting on Shad and the van full of the rest of the crew to pick us up. Headed on down to Woodward West for the Old guy jam. Not sure 100% who all is rolling down with us in the van. Some people were maybe going maybe not. Guess when they show I'll know and post a list of old fools rolling down. Should be a blast. Hitting a few parks, Myrtle Creek, Talent, and Ashland, on the way down. Guess the plan is stay with Solid Bikes tonight and get up early hit the bike park in Fresno Friday morning and on to Woodward. Stoked. For all of you not making it, sorry so sad, I'll keep you posted on the trip over the next few days.

JAY WILSON 2013 SX CHAMP!

UNIT and GYTR Yamaha’s Jay Wilson put the finishing touches on a superb Australian Supercross Championship taking second at the final round in Toowoomba and in the process has won the 2013 Under 19 Australian Supercross Championship on his YZ250F.

Jay wilson

Wilson had won the previous four rounds contested and only needed a mature ride in the final round at Toowoomba to secure the points to take his first national championship. He did exactly that and after a strong start in the main event, he maintained a solid second place in the 15 lap final and that was more than enough to secure the championship win.

“I’m so happy that’s over and we got the championship,” Wilson said after the race. “It’s been three weeks since the last round and it’s been like walking on egg shells but we got it done and that’s what matters. I didn’t ride the best tonight, a bit stiff and tight and also most too cautious but I had to keep one eye on the race and the other on the championship and not do anything silly. I can’t thank the GYTR Yamaha team enough. They have been right behind me all year and they continue to provide me with the best bikes and support so it’s nice to win this championship for them as much as it is for me.”

Yamaha Junior Racing rider Wilson Todd made it a near perfect night for the Yamaha YZ250F taking the win in the Junior Lites event. Todd took the lead right from the get go and won the race comfortably. It was also the final event for the current generation YZ250F and its swan song was the championship victories of Luke Styke in the Pro Lites win, Jay Wilson taking the Under 19 division while Wilson Todd claimed the final round win in the junior category.

The all-new 2014 YZ250F is due for release this week for the Yamaha dealer network. Check out the Yamaha Motor Australia promotional video of the new bike featuring Jay Wilson at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gs4jWWjJWg8&feature=youtu.be

Real Word Cycling (RWC) BB Replacement Bearings

In January of this year, I felt my Shimano BB bearings going to shit - again. I can tell when they're headed for the garbage - doing some weird ticking thing with every pedal stroke. After all, on a cyclocross bike, most of us are using road bike BB's not really designed to be descending bumpy fireroads at break-neck speed.

A few fellow Quadzillians referred me to Real World Cycling BB bearings. RWC offers a variety of things dealing with moving parts: bearings, derailleur pulleys, suspension parts, headsets, etc. The lowest cost BB bearings they offer state:

One of the most important features of a bearing relating to smoothness and longevity is the ball size and the quantity of them. Below are 3 scale drawings of our Enduro Bottom Bracket bearing, a competitors? standard Bottom Bracket bearing and a really sub-standard design of Bottom Bracket Bearing we purchased from another website.

While the static capacity of our bearing is 726 lbs. and the sub-standard bearing is only 229 lbs., if this is not enough to convince you of ours, consider the fact that the larger balls of the Enduro bearing will roll easier and with less energy loss than the smaller balls in the other bearings.

The Enduro balls will spin about 1/2 as many times for 1 crank rotation, and, because of the deeper ball groove they sit in, will stay in alignment of the ball path and with less friction during the high torque forces exherted by a typical crankset.

A deeper ball groove also lends to the lateral strength of a bearing. The groove or ball paths in our bearings are the deepest possible, cupping the bearing to the maximum height and support; see the Side Profile Illustrations:

I purchased a set of Hollowtech replacement bearings for $23, shipped. Installation was easy - since I wasn't keeping my old bearings, I could damage them by tapping them out. Pressing the new ones in was easy with a long bolt, a nut and some washers. Of course, after installation, my bottom bracket spins without clicking or ticking.

I was pretty disappointed at the Shimano stock bearings. I've gone through a few of them, and noticed that they didn't last very long. I highly recommend looking at these RWC bearings - so far they seem to be really holding up well. I will update my review in 6 months.

the "TRIP" concluded

After lunch the MegaRamp was opened up for sessioning. Most people headed up on the hill to at least watch what went down. After filling out a seven page waiver you could set foot on the massive new structure. Safety was a big concern and those that looked too squirrelly were cut off. Boozedawg was one of those booted after blowing off the pedals on a sketchy attempt. Shad gave it a few tries but decided it wasn't for him and was content to watch. My first run at it I think I was almost half way up the roll in. I wasn't sure how the lip was going to feel and wanted to feel it out. It felt good and so on following runs I slowly worked my way higher till I was landing on the top right before the "box" started angling to the landing. Shea Nyquist was the first person to clear it after pedaling about six times down the roll in. He overshot by quit a bit, but it was then I realized I would have to pedal at it to make it. Lance Mosley wasn't down with tagging so he went for it first try and got bucked by the lip and ejected. After seeing him, Matt Mardesetch, and Ryan Nyquist bail it was even harder not to be nervous. I tried not to look down the roll in too much while waiting my turn and on my next try I took three pedals thinking it would be enough to clear but not overshoot. Wrong! I cleared the flat on top for the first time but hit a small slant a bit over a bike length long before the landing and then bounced a ways down the landing. Oooooohs from the crowd watching and an increased heart rate. Scary! I was determined not to let the opportunity pass me by to do this and headed back up for another go. More pedals this time and I made it to the landing but pitched forward a bit too much and landed foot down. More OOOooohs and heart pounding! Next go I stuck it clean and was content to call it quits. All and all there were about seven people, including myself,f that cleared it. Check that off my bucket list! I headed back to down the hill to ride with Marcus and missed all the big tricks. Mosley flipped it, Birdwell superman seat-grabbed it, and Ryan Nyquist 360'd it.

Not sure who took this pic but you can check out more here.

Damn that looks big! Cell photo Scott Hagnas.

The rest of the day we spent riding ourselves into exhaustion. Riley worked on some backflips and got some on the resi ramp. I finally sacked up and 360'd the box jump. I was probably more stoked on that then the MegaRamp. It's something I should do without hesitation but over the past few years my confidence with spinning has been at an all time low. Thanks Woodward for the confidence boost.

After the session ended there was an after party in the lodge. Free food, free beer and bmxers is always a great recipe for good times. Dave Nourie, Anthony, and a couple other flatlander's put on a show in the bar. Dave is quite the showman. When the two kegs ran dry and the bar closed up a group of us moved on to one of the rooms. The room stay was short lived after the occupants realized that if they wanted their room to be inhabitable, the party better continue elsewhere. The whole first floor of the lodge was awoken by everyone looking for someone else's room to wreck. I don't think a door or window was missed by someone banging on it. No more party animals, so we hung out in the parking lot where Jeremy and Boozedawg kept us laughing with their drunken antics. Ben Ward gave me another reason not to have a facebook by posting pics of Jeremy DRUNK on his, resulting in an angry voicemail from the wife wondering why he wouldn't answer the phone when she called to check on him. Too funny. How no one knocked one out Boozedawg is beyond me. He was sac tapping or thumb in the bumming everyone within reach. Quite a few people will remember him after that night for sure! Needless to say we didn't make it up and get on the road by eight as was "planned". We left Woodward around 11 am. The Portland bunch of the crew got home around 5 am the next morning. Quite an unforgettable road trip. Check out the pics below and links for more event coverage.

First Impressions - Stolen Saint 24" BMX Cruiser

"You're NOT going to sell or trade this bike, right?" says my wife after I just finished putting my new 24" BMX Cruiser together.

"NO way... I'm never making that mistake again." I answer.

The mistake I was referring to, was the dumb decision of trading my Eastern Traildigger 26" BMX Cruiser for a broken (not to my knowledge) Gary Fisher MTB. It's a decision I've been regretting for awhile, and since 2010 I've wanted my BMX Cruiser back - just haven't had the extra funds to buy a new one.

Well, after some research, leveraging some cash, and taking advantage of a sweet $30 off Dan's Comp coupon code, I opted for the Stolen Saint 24".

The new-school 24" cruisers are definitely on the come up. Old guys a.k.a. former BMX'ers in their 30's and 40's are looking back at those fun times they had terrorizing the neighborhood on their 20" bikes. However, with older bodies with muscles and joints that don't move like they did in our teens, we're looking for a BMX bike that has a little more give, sits up a little taller and yet has that "freestyle" geometry found on 20" bikes. In other words, we want to shred without committing to a small wheel bike - and thus, the 24" BMX freestyle cruiser fits the need for Dad and his curb hops and endos. Although, a younger market is starting to catch on. And Dad isn't just sticking to endos.

Sunday!, Stolen, Free Agent, Haro and others have stepped into the 24" BMX freestyle cruiser market. Subrosa and a few others are on their way. In the past, 24" cruisers were restricted to lightweight racing bikes that, quite frankly, would explode under a Clydesdale racer like me. But now, we have beefier options available that perform great on the street, park and trail.

I am racing XC next week in the local series, and I just started to feel a little burned out on training. I've been riding 100mi. a week and averaging 10,000' of climbing... so the thought of hitting the trails in lycra today just didn't seem fun. Plus, the season hasn't even started yet and I'm feeling this way - so I had to shake things up a bit.

I decided to drive down to Santa Cruz, Ca. and hit my old spots on the new 24".

I'm not going to rehash the specs of the Stolen Saint 24"; they can be found HERE. I am, however, going to share my impressions coming from a 38 yr. old man who loves BMX down to my core.

Immediately, the Saint felt right. It just seemed to click perfectly. Bunny hopping felt good, nose wheelies felt good, my-sorry-excuses-for-manuals felt "good" and it just felt like a great riding bike. I could not feel the extra 4" of wheel on this bike - in fact, it really felt like I was riding a 20" bike. Stolen truly took the time to perfect the geometry, because at one point I forgot I was riding a cruiser altogether. In contrast to the Eastern Traildigger - I knew I was on a large cruiser atop the 26". Not this bike.

I haven't ridden BMX in awhile, so I just wanted to get my bunny hops back. I jumped some curbs, did some very small nose wheelie drops off curbs, and hopped up a ledge that was about 2ft. tall. Today's ride was 20 miles of ear-to-ear smiles. Santa Cruz was beautiful - 65 in the middle of January.

Some of the issues I had with this bike became apparent at around mile 10. I attempted a hang-5 and the bars slipped. They actually slipped 3 times today. I jumped a curb, and I heard a CLANK! which appeared to be the stem and headset. The front hub came loose, and I had to re-grease and dial it in.  The Tektro rear brake needs to GO - it does not stop whatsoever which was a little nerve racking on West Cliff Dr. Forget about abubacas (I know you young guns can do them brakeless - but not this old fart).

The Stolen Saint 24" is a value at +/- $400, but not without its issues. I believe the geometry and 7.5" bars match perfectly, and the stock parts seemed to do the job. Some components felt low budget (like the front hub) so I will need to dial those things in - especially that slipping stem - which I thought didn't exist in today's BMX world. However, components I can deal with... the soul of the bike is that awesome freestyle geometry.

I recommend the Stolen Saint 24" to anybody looking at getting into the 24"BMX Freestyle revolution. For more information about this bike and the variety of other cruisers available on the market, check out the experts at Cruiser Revolution.

The Carter's

I caught this in my email this week. Todd Carter is a super cool friend and this video needs to be shared. This is what its all about the next generation of riders. Thanks to John and Conor Yull.

Words By John Yull

Watching Todd, Camden and Colin ride and compete in Anderson was such a great experience! Taking turns in the practice area with the boys put a smile on my face. Then watching Todd get more nervous that the boys during their runs was priceless! Here's to the next generation of flatlanders...Filmed and edited by Conor Yull

First Impression: Haro Zebra Frame

I turned 38 this month. Yesterday, in fact.

I got birthday cash (yeah, still at my age) - and I bought a new frame with that cash.

I had one of the best BMX rides I've had in a long time, yesterday.

I've been eyeballin' the Subrosa DTT (double top tube) since they announced it - and boy, I really wanted one. In particular - the street frame in size 21". Although I ride mostly flatland, I love street. I can ride flatland on a street frame, but riding street on a flatland frame just plain sucks. I've owned flatland frames in the past; they have extremely short top tubes (18" generally), high bottom brackets with tiny Spanish bearings, twitchy geometry... just a very specific design for a very specific niche of riding.

So, having had my mind set on a 21" street frame, the Subrosa was on my list of "want" items. Well, it is tax time - and I usually pay every year (I've had to pay taxes for the last 10 years). The total birthday cash I got was $270 (yeah, not bad!) and the Subrosa DTT goes for $379. Even Kip at Master Blaster Planet  offered me a great deal on shipping - but I just couldn't justify it. Because with that new frame, I would have to get a new BB (because my GT Pro Performer was an American BB, and this takes a mid-BB), headset, and I also wanted a new stem (Subrosa, of course), pivotal seatpost and a comfy pivotal seat. With the Subrosa DTT frame and all the fixin's - I would be well into the upper $400 range. Going that far away from my birthday cash wouldn't be a prudent decision during tax time.

The other frame I've been looking at was the Haro Zebra frame. Reviewing the specs, it is  full chromoly and the geometry and weight matched the Subrosa DTT street exactly. The difference was the price - $159.99 at DansComp. Other features of the frame were removable brake mounts and gyro tabs. And boy, do I need both! I was able to get the frame, BB, headset, Shadow seatpost, Kink Sexton seat and Subrosa stem for $275, shipped.

After riding my mid-school 2000 GT, I really thought I just sucked. I lost my 360 bunnyhops, high bunnyhops, wall rides, etc. Flatland didn't come easy, and forget about decent street riding. Really, I thought it was just me. And while my BMX skill level isn't that grand by today's standards - I can throw down as good as an old BMX'er does. Not so much on that GT, though.

I left a couple black rainbows.

Well, well, well... the Haro "woke up" my riding. Not only could I hit every flatland trick I know, but street was absolutely flawless. I was able to bunnyhop, jump, fastplant, manual, g-turn, half cab, nose manual, etc. I spun my 360 bunnyhops, and yes, on my birthday, I re-learned bunnyhop wall rides, which I haven't done in years. It was as if I was 16 yrs. old again.

I will be attending the Old School BMX Reunion down in Woodward West this year, and with the new equipment, I feel A LOT more confident going there.

The weight doesn't bother me at 29.66lbs. Yes, I know we live in a world of weight weenies, but hey, I'm no stranger to heavy BMX bikes. You just kinda get used to it... I figure if I stripped it down to one of the brakeless, two pegged, slammed-seat BMX bikes the kids are riding nowadays, it would come in at around 25lbs - but for me, that just wouldn't work.

TIRES! Reviews of Four Budget Friendly Forte' Brand Tires from Performance Bike

Again, I have to apologize for not keeping up with my blog. This used to be a place for me to post pictures and give ride reports, but with the advent of Instagram, I've pretty much left my picture posting for there. If you want to follow me, please look me up as "dionridesbikes" - I totally appreciate the follows and especially the comments.

Today I'm going to give you a long overdue review of the Performance brand "Forte'" tires: The Dartmoor, Pisgah, Tsali and Metro. With the exception of the Metro, I've used these in a variety of situations, from racing Sea Otter to pavement use to my local trail jaunts. The Metro is a recent addition, so I'm going to offer my first ride impressions.

Performance Bike re-brands components and accessories under the Forte' name, but from speaking with the employees from the local shop, they say the source of these parts are from a variety of major manufacturers (Kenda was mentioned as being a manufacturer of many of their tires). All of these tires are under $20, which is a great value during these rough economic times.

The Dartmoor

I was initially turned on to the Dartmoor for it's tread pattern. When I was looking at a tire to be used as a rear for Sea Otter, I liked the idea of a fast rolling rear with low treads that would handle well on a hard-packed XC course. Looking closer at the tread pattern, it resembles the Schwalbe Furious Fred tire, claimed by Schwalbe to be the fastest rolling tire they offer; however, the Dartmoor is just 1/5 of the price of a Furious Fred. Unfortunately, after test riding the Sea Otter course, I swapped this out for the Tsali, which are reviewed furthered down.

As suspected, the Dartmoor handles well for the hard-packed situations where the ground is stable; loose pebbles and such will render this tire useless. It rolls fast, and does well at low tire pressures, such as 25PSI. With raised knobs on the side, it corners surprisingly well, but only when the loose gravel is nonexistent. The folding bead version comes in at a wonderfully light 524g (claimed weight), so you weight-weenies out there can sleep well at night.

Currently, these tires are on my vintage KHS Montana Pro. Since I baby my vintage ride a bit, I stick to fire roads and these tires work extremely well for those days on the dirty hills. For anything aggressive, such as all-mountain riding, I would recommend looking for something else. They roll fast with the compromise of no knobby traction.

For a commuter or adventure tire, I would highly recommend this as a choice to consider. For dirt paths and exploration, the Dartmoor offers a great alternative to pavement-specific tires that are difficult to navigate through the dirty stuff.

The Pisgah

I have chosen the Pisgah as a front tire on my On-One 456 Single Speed. It rolls great for a front tire and traction is very good. Coming hard into corners is done with confidence and it is wearing quite well given the conditions have been dry and scratchy; I ride pavement to the trails which probably wears them a bit faster. I have run this tire as low as 23PSI without any pinch flats; claimed weight is at 740g. For a 26 X 2.3 tire, I don't think 740g is too much of a weight disadvantage.

As a rear, I think I would choose something else unless the conditions warrant a heavier knobbied tire. The larger knobs are somewhat resistant to faster rolling, but they are ramped to offer some roll-ability.

The Tsali

For Sea Otter, I ran these both front and back. I am now using this as a rear on my SingleSpeed, and, unfortunately, it has worn very fast. The tread pattern reminds me of an off-road/dirt bike trials tire: knobby enough for some traction, but low, ramped tread for speed. I have mounted these ghetto tubeless without issue, and with inner tubes, I've gone down to lower air pressures without issue.

I like how fast this tire rolls, but the compromise of wear is bothersome. I would love this tread pattern in a compound that lasted a bit longer.

The Metro

I recently installed the 700X35c versions of these tires on a set of 29'er wheels and squeezed onto my Leader 510H frame (26'er frame). My first impressions of these tires have been positive: great feeling compound, light at 430g, rolls fast, comfy, and supple. These are a much better tire than the cheap hybrid tires I had on before. They provide a much better cushion than my previous tires, but roll much better.

I look forward to seeing how well these wear over time. I would recommend these for touring and commuting.

I wanted to offer my impression of these tires in case you had your doubts. These are simply re-branded tires from an array of major manufacturers, and I have trusted them on my local jaunts and even my modest stint at the Sea Otter Classic.

If you are looking for sub-$20 tires that provide great performance, the value of the Forte' line will be hard to beat.
