Skate Sauce Christmas Party

Check out this dope little Skate Sauce video featuring the front yard of my office in K-Town. K-Town is dope because it is home to the highest populated region of excellent LA restaurants per capita. You don’t have to walk far after a hard session of skateboarding to get your favorite bowl of kimchi, galbi or dolsotbap. The Skate Sauce crew threw a very rare Christmas party/skate session at J-Kwon earlier this week with Sammy Baptista, Sewa Kroetkov and some local LA skaters.

Gary Young Signature Sunday Bikes

Exclusive Action Village interview with team rider Gary Young. Learn about what went into the making of Gary Young's Sunday pro- model, who they are good for, custom features and overall stoke level. Check out the bikes on Action Village

What went into the making of your bike?
When Sunday and I were talking about putting a line of complete bikes together, the most important thing that we talked about was making sure that they were completely shreddable right out of the box. Since shreddability is our number one goal, we came up with four levels (AM, EX, Pro, and Signature) of affordable bikes that are ready to be ridden. All of the bikes also come with Odyssey parts--making the bikes simply the the most complete, completes.

What kind of custom features did you add to it?
I got to help pick out all the parts and color schemes that come on the bikes. Besides my Signature bike, I think that the Bigfoot Monster Truck inspired model is my favorite.  The gold parts with the blue frame, forks, and bars just look so good together.  I also helped choose all the angles so the bike has a solid overall feel.

What was the overall input that you had in developing your own pro model?
I got to help choose everything from start to finish. Check out the signature model for proof, it is nearly identical to the bike I am riding right now!

What kind of riders is the bike best for?
When we started talking about making complete bikes, I was really excited to help create something that was accessible and fun for a wide range of people. Whether you are just starting out on a bike or you are shredding the nearest skate park, dirt jumps or street, these bikes = having fun! My bike has been designed so that anyone will be able to jump on it, but more specifically they were designed for people who want to have fun riding.

Anything else really that your stoked on about your bike.
Check out the Sunday team where we built up some completes and rode them right out of the box.

MTBR Sunday Dirt Mass - January 15th, 2012

Some go to mass on Sunday. Mountain bikers go to Dirt Mass on Sunday.

Fugetaboutit.

My buddy, Brett, put this one on - as he does every few months. It's a great time at my local trails, and it's nice to be able to introduce other riders to Santa Teresa County Park: an amazing South Bay gem. As always, the Sunday Dirt Mass rides are "no drop", so no matter how slow you are, we always wait up.

We all arrived at the trailhead around 9:00am. On my way over I caught up with Brett (who also rides to the trails) on the paved multi-use trail and we spun along at a break neck speed of 9mph on our single speeds on flat ground. Pulling up, we already noticed a gang of people and knew that it was going to be a nice turnout; surprisingly strong during the NFL playoffs. We started our ride around 9:20am.

The head count was approximately 25-27 riders - all skill levels, all ages, all types of bikes.

We broke up into two groups: the "faster" group - who took on the more difficult trails at a faster pace, and the "slower" group, who I took on a good calorie burner. What makes Santa Teresa County Park especially accommodating is that no matter which route you take, you will pretty much always end up in the same place. This allowed the group at large to meet at central locations for a large re-group. Even with the "no drop" rule, some riders took wrong turns and ended up breaking off, but we all eventually found each other due to the trail system.

I'm very happy that my group had fun. I didn't want the route to be too difficult, but I also didn't want it to be too boring. There was a lot of climbing, but there are also fun, technical descends (like Stile Ranch Trail).

Until next time, dirt thumpers.

Lost & Filmed: Sean Malto

By now, you’ve probably watched PRETTY SWEET over a dozen times trying to analyze every little detail about the film. By doing so, you can increase your knowledge on the art of skateboarding. By observation alone, you may subconsciously acquire the physics of skating like a pro. It especially helps that 85% of the film is shot in the cleanest slow motion available. Some of us don’t have that luxury to watch our heroes in super slow-mo. We have to watch it in jittery slow-mo that comes standard on a regular VCR. I can relate because when one of my favorite FILMS came out, I was forced to absorb the various dance moves by stopping each frame in a sequence. Doing so is so time consuming, especially when you have to push little buttons to get the frame and then run back to your dance mat to try out that MOVE. So feel lucky that Ty Evans created a masterpiece that you can rely on to help improve your skills. In addition to the amazing movie, Girl/Chocolate have released some extra lost footage for you to enjoy. Here yo go, check out this lost footage featuring SEAN MALTO. It’s pretty [...]

Day 2: A Villain and a Superhero

Friday, day two we woke up early especially for how late we went to bed. Kind of hard to sleep through the sounds of Aaron Huff putting in work for too long. He was in the warehouse as usual at 5 AM and we were up by 8. Dave Nourie and Juan Carlos had met us late in the night and shared in the generosity of our accommodations. Big thanks to Huff for allowing twelve stinky dudes to cramp up his space to sleep. If you're not riding a Solid, chances are you should be, go here and buy one. We loaded up our sleeping bags and waited for Rob Jenson to show up. He was joining Dave and Carlos in their car to head down to Fresno and Woodward. While we waited Boozedawg was in full effect. A pint of Sailor Jerry's and countless beers on the way down and on into the night at Solid turned into beers in the morning. Boozedawg uses a loud voice and Sailor Jerry's breath to spread misery to any within the van.

On the way to Fresno silly stories and the team Schralp video that was, according to Shad, to have footage of Fresno's park helped pass the time on the drive. Turns out after watching it, there is not. World traveler and We The People team rider Chester Blacksmith's international sex stories, with photographic evidence, also kept us entertained. Playstation's, TV's, laptops and cell phones were not anything I ever had on road trips as a kid. Sure are nice to have now. On a pit stop Boozedawg warned me that Jeremy had started a nut slapping game and I should be on high alert. I asked him if he knew the capital of Thailand and gave him the answer. BANGKOK! Right in his! Heavy laughter followed by a hand over the goods for protection. As they say, "Paybacks a BITCH!", and I got mine. I thought I was covered up but Boozedawg came in the van swinging and doubled me over. Onward to Fresno with everyone worried about their sack.

In the van watching Team Schralp.

If you haven't made the trip to Fresno I highly recommend it. A huge concrete park that is BIKES ONLY! You can tell by the size of everything and the obstacles you don't normally see in skate parks that it was designed with bikes in mind. Boozedawg had never set tire in a cradle before and made it his goal to loop it. After a bit he had made a very respectable level of upside down. The rest of us worked out some lines and watched local shredder and Kink Flow Rider Chad Osburn destroy the park. Fresno was HOT! Almost 90 degrees hot, and coming from rainy Oregon made it a little hard to adjust. Riley and I ducked out for some shade, a drink, and a quick rest. Coming back Dave Nourie told me I needed to hurry back and check out my son. I panicked for a second thinking he was hurt but he told me he was fine but fully looping the 19' cradle. Stoked we pedaled back to check out the action. Everyone started yelling at me to check out Mac and he dropped in and started cranking! I was nervous because he was hauling ass and when we had got there he was barely making it over half way up. I about dropped a load when I saw how high he got! The boy wonder was born! He will be forever after known as "Captain Cradle". A 13 year old had just robbed Boozedawg of his glory! The crew made sure to let me know I had a short time before my kid would pass me by in the skills department. Marcus made sure to ask me how it felt to be outdone by a thirteen year old. My response was that I wasn't sure yet but to make sure to ask everyone else because I wasn't the only one. Damn Kids!

Fresno Bike Park

Besides a crazy bike park the city of Fresno is kind of gnarly. Driving to find the park we saw streets piled with garbage for blocks. Turns out it was an annual cleanup but that, combined with poor neighborhoods, gave us a creepy vibe. We thought we were going to see a murder when we witnessed a dude rolling a Jeep Cherokee on 24's worth more than it, hit an equally gangster looking dude in a crosswalk. Looks like after some words they worked it out and no one died. A Wall mart stop for some supplies made us quickly realize how much of a minority we were in those parts. Some threatening comments at the burrito joint we ate dinner somewhat confirmed 10 white dudes weren't a common site and maybe none too welcome. We skipped town and headed to the promised land. Woodward West. We rolled into the lodge at Woodward around 11 PM. After checking in most of us took a shower and headed to the bar downstairs to catch up with friends already in attendance.

To be continued....

A Message From Chris Doyle

It's been a while since I've sent something in for the blog.  I pretty much sat around all winter healing from ankle surgery.  So, I'm happy to report that I'm back on the bike and back on the road.  I just returned home from Iraq where I was doing demo's for the troops.  It was an unbelievable experience to say the least!  You can tell that the troops don't get much of a 'thanks' or a break from the norm so it felt great to give them a little show and a little break from their daily routines!  Attached are a few photos...

Best,
Chris

Team Social Pace @ Sea Otter - It's Official

Well, a few of us in the rag-tag group of Team Social Pace is officially "in" the XC race for the Sea Otter taking place in Monterey, April 19th-22nd. So far, it is me (Cat3, 35-39 mens), Ken a.k.a. Froride1 (Cat3, Clydesdale), Brett a.k.a. Leopold Porkstacker (Cat2, 40-42), and Robert a.k.a. Nelson34 (Cat3, 43-45).

With hopes of selling more UGLY! Pads and selling off some extra parts I have, I've rebuilt and upgraded my XC bike to race trim. I will be sporting a red set of Sun Ringle Equalizer Wheels, a new Suntour Epicon 100mm Fork and a FSA Alpha Double 36/24 Crankset. My bike will be relatively heavy for a XC bike (I predict 26.5lbs), but for me, on a budget, that's what I will have to live with.

I'm still sticking with an 8 sp. in back, since it's what I have and really not in the position to be upgrading my drive train at the moment.

This will be my first MTB race, so it will be interesting to see how hard this will be in comparison to cyclocross racing.

Day one

So the crew is Shad Johnson, Chester Blacksmith, Jeremy Davis, Riley Peetz, Eric Jenson, Joe Lumina, Anthony Tanglin, Andy McIntosh, Marcus Walter and Frank Walter. All of us crammed in the big ass rental van. The vans pretty dialed we have TV, and a PS2 so bmx videos and video games fill in the boredom of the drive. Left my house around 9:30 and made first stop in Myrtle Creek to ride the park. Fun session, nothing to heavy going down but the good weather made things really nice. Got Marcus and Andy to carve over the tunnel opening after some heckling. Marcus got our heart rates up on his first try not quite making it and hopping in the last part and clipped rear wheel and blew off the pedals. By the time we left he had it on lock. Next stop was Talent after a crappy lunch at DQ. Road trip diet. Talent used to seem so big but with all the new parks that are so much bigger it felt small now. 5 years can really change your perspective. Still another fun session in shorts and a t-shirt. Dialed. Andy and I were joking about not knowing how many In and Out burgers were between Eugene and Woodward but traveling with Shad we would find out. First one was in Redding our last stop before arriving at the Solid Bikes warehouse in Sacremento around 2 am to crash on the floor. Big thanks to Aaron Huff for free lodging. Next stop is Fresno bike park and onto Woodward.

TIRES! Reviews of Four Budget Friendly Forte' Brand Tires from Performance Bike

Again, I have to apologize for not keeping up with my blog. This used to be a place for me to post pictures and give ride reports, but with the advent of Instagram, I've pretty much left my picture posting for there. If you want to follow me, please look me up as "dionridesbikes" - I totally appreciate the follows and especially the comments.

Today I'm going to give you a long overdue review of the Performance brand "Forte'" tires: The Dartmoor, Pisgah, Tsali and Metro. With the exception of the Metro, I've used these in a variety of situations, from racing Sea Otter to pavement use to my local trail jaunts. The Metro is a recent addition, so I'm going to offer my first ride impressions.

Performance Bike re-brands components and accessories under the Forte' name, but from speaking with the employees from the local shop, they say the source of these parts are from a variety of major manufacturers (Kenda was mentioned as being a manufacturer of many of their tires). All of these tires are under $20, which is a great value during these rough economic times.

The Dartmoor

I was initially turned on to the Dartmoor for it's tread pattern. When I was looking at a tire to be used as a rear for Sea Otter, I liked the idea of a fast rolling rear with low treads that would handle well on a hard-packed XC course. Looking closer at the tread pattern, it resembles the Schwalbe Furious Fred tire, claimed by Schwalbe to be the fastest rolling tire they offer; however, the Dartmoor is just 1/5 of the price of a Furious Fred. Unfortunately, after test riding the Sea Otter course, I swapped this out for the Tsali, which are reviewed furthered down.

As suspected, the Dartmoor handles well for the hard-packed situations where the ground is stable; loose pebbles and such will render this tire useless. It rolls fast, and does well at low tire pressures, such as 25PSI. With raised knobs on the side, it corners surprisingly well, but only when the loose gravel is nonexistent. The folding bead version comes in at a wonderfully light 524g (claimed weight), so you weight-weenies out there can sleep well at night.

Currently, these tires are on my vintage KHS Montana Pro. Since I baby my vintage ride a bit, I stick to fire roads and these tires work extremely well for those days on the dirty hills. For anything aggressive, such as all-mountain riding, I would recommend looking for something else. They roll fast with the compromise of no knobby traction.

For a commuter or adventure tire, I would highly recommend this as a choice to consider. For dirt paths and exploration, the Dartmoor offers a great alternative to pavement-specific tires that are difficult to navigate through the dirty stuff.

The Pisgah

I have chosen the Pisgah as a front tire on my On-One 456 Single Speed. It rolls great for a front tire and traction is very good. Coming hard into corners is done with confidence and it is wearing quite well given the conditions have been dry and scratchy; I ride pavement to the trails which probably wears them a bit faster. I have run this tire as low as 23PSI without any pinch flats; claimed weight is at 740g. For a 26 X 2.3 tire, I don't think 740g is too much of a weight disadvantage.

As a rear, I think I would choose something else unless the conditions warrant a heavier knobbied tire. The larger knobs are somewhat resistant to faster rolling, but they are ramped to offer some roll-ability.

The Tsali

For Sea Otter, I ran these both front and back. I am now using this as a rear on my SingleSpeed, and, unfortunately, it has worn very fast. The tread pattern reminds me of an off-road/dirt bike trials tire: knobby enough for some traction, but low, ramped tread for speed. I have mounted these ghetto tubeless without issue, and with inner tubes, I've gone down to lower air pressures without issue.

I like how fast this tire rolls, but the compromise of wear is bothersome. I would love this tread pattern in a compound that lasted a bit longer.

The Metro

I recently installed the 700X35c versions of these tires on a set of 29'er wheels and squeezed onto my Leader 510H frame (26'er frame). My first impressions of these tires have been positive: great feeling compound, light at 430g, rolls fast, comfy, and supple. These are a much better tire than the cheap hybrid tires I had on before. They provide a much better cushion than my previous tires, but roll much better.

I look forward to seeing how well these wear over time. I would recommend these for touring and commuting.

I wanted to offer my impression of these tires in case you had your doubts. These are simply re-branded tires from an array of major manufacturers, and I have trusted them on my local jaunts and even my modest stint at the Sea Otter Classic.

If you are looking for sub-$20 tires that provide great performance, the value of the Forte' line will be hard to beat.
