3rd Annual Mt. Hamilton Superbowl Ride

For the third time in a row, I've ventured off with the svelte road jockeys to climb this monster. The first time was on my Surly Pacer, the second time was on a slicked MTB, and yesterday was on my Surly Pacer again. I, personally, was a little slow yesterday, but I made it in just over 4 hours.
Team Social Pace rode up together and it was a blast. Unfortunately, a few of our guys fell off the back, but we all made it eventually and arrived in time for some food and drink at the end. Yesterday I realized how much my road game has suffered and that I really ought to train for this ride so I'm not so slow - I'm only making incremental improvements on this climb and I'd like to get up there with the quicker group next year. Time to HTFU!

Madrid X-Fighters Photos & Results

Tom Pages wins the 'Best Move' award with this epic 'Special Flip' © All photos J. Mitter - redbullxfighters.com

It is pretty fair to say that the 25,000 screaming fans in Madrid were treated to one of the best, most exciting and most progressive FMX contest in years this past weekend!

Every rider was at the top of their game, bringing all latest and most dangerous tricks to their full freestyle runs. Inlcuding X Games Gold medallist Taka Higashino throwing down his 'Rock Solid Backflip', and Unit rider Tom Pages throwing both of his incredible body varials, the 'Volt' and the 'Special Flip', in the same run! Tom would ultimately win the 'Best Move' award for the night.

The competiton was tight, and it must have been a big struggle for the judges to make the decisions. In the end it was the effortless style of Levi Sherwood who would take the win though, with local hero Dany Torres close behind in 2nd. Unit team rider Maikel Melero is really starting to make a name for himself now as well, scoring 3rd place with an amazing run including one of the most stretched out 'Double Grab Backflips' we have ever seen.

Check out all the highlight videos and galleries now at www.redbullxfighters.com.

Brian and Gary at Woodward West's Winter Camp!

Gary Young and I just wrapped up 2010 in a big way... at Woodward West's winter camp. This years camp was 3 action packed days with over 130 BMX campers getting free reign on this bike riding paradise. We rode a ton, filmed some clips, played dodgeball, footdown, and tons of other fun stuff. Almost everyone got something free and everyone left with a smile on their face. Ten lucky campers ended up with a $20 gift card to ActionVillage. Some won them because of their BMX skills and some won because of their "paper-rock-scissors" skills. Either way we were glad to play Santa Claus one more time before the end of the year. One camper, Alistair, really needed a new pair of forks, luckily Gary noticed and hooked up with with $20 off his new pair courtesy of Action Village. Stoked!
Thanks again to Woodward West for an amazing week and can't wait to visit again! - Brian Kachinsky

...Aaaannnnnd, WE'RE BACK.

WOW!

So it's been over a month since I posted in here - sorry to all you fine folks who are following me... life got super busy. Today, I'm taking a day (or two) off from riding, so I decided to post up in here more of my misadventures.

TSP (Team Social Pace) from MTBR has been hitting it pretty well this past month. A few weeks ago, my brother guided us on a pretty damn-epic ride through Wilder ranch and other not-to-be-disclosed trails in the upper region of the UC Santa Cruz area. It was a large ride of about 15 souls and everybody had a great time. My bro really pushed the pace on his 'cross bike, baffling others how/why they were hammering on a TSP ride, so it actually turned out to be a pretty decent calorie burner.

If you follow my blog posts, you now know I'm always messing with my bikes and switching things around. My Leader 510H has been re-appropriated into a Bike Party bike, the On-One Inbred 29'er has gears and a suspension fork, and the On-One 456 has remained the same.

I decided to turn my On-One Inbred 29'er into a true, geared mountain bike again because I'm enjoying the technical stuff. The latest feat, the 1st annual 2012 Rocky Ridge No-Dab Challenge, has put me into a new frame of mind, and gears and suspension ain't the work of the devil as I felt before. In fact, my new XC32TK 29'er fork really has saved me from rattling my teeth fillings loose. Please read my review of this fork below.

Bogden created this nice video of a few of the Bay Area MTBR guys going for RR No-Dabs. So far we only have 7 guys make this climb without putting a foot down; I hope to get it done soon.

If you live in the Bay Area, take a trip to San Jose and try this out! Get your name on the plaque!

My First Impressions of the RockShox XC32TK 29'er fork

First off, the On-One Inbred 29'er isn't the lightest of bikes - in fact... it's a tank. I have mine outfitted with SLX and XT components, Kenda Ingnitor tires (tubeless) and some heavy'ish Velocity Blunt/Shimano Wheels, and it comes in at 30.94lbs. - but let's just call it 31lbs. The 100mm travel fork (as opposed to the Kona P2 rigid fork I had) change the geometry a bit, and I'm going to have to get used to it. I've been riding hard, so I really can't give a true, rested-body test of the fork until my legs heal up a bit, but so far, it feels like it's slowed my riding down a little. But again, I'll have to see after some days of rest. FWIW, I'm considering some new wheels to "liven" my Inbred up a bit - right now it feels like a steamroller.

Money-wise, things are a little tight right now, so I had to go with a budget fork. The XC32TK 29'er is heavy, has limited adjustments (preload, rebound, lock-out), but is plush and soaks up bumps pretty well. The "32" in the name stands for "32mm stanchions", and the other options come in 28mm and 30mm, respectively. Small, washboard chatter isn't pleasant, but much better than the rigid fork I had before. Bigger hitting rocks on XC applications feel great.

I called Trailhead Cyclery to see if they could order an extra-firm spring, but they couldn't due to unavailability. So, I will have to keep playing with the pre-load adjustment to stiffen things up a bit - and I may even put heavier oil in there which helped the 26" Tora immensely. I guess this all should be expected when going with a budget fork. From what I read, this fork is the new version of the RockShox Tora fork, which is on my 456 in the 26", 120mm version.

For my weight, the XC32TK dives pretty bad, which is why I think heavy oil is the way to go since I can't swap out springs. The oil should help a little with compression damping. It also feels a bit noodle'y, so I'm hoping a slight damper in the compression solves that.

My initial thoughts on the XC32TK 29'er fork are: cheap, sturdy, easy, heavy, needs work for my weight. For under $200, I don't see any problem purchasing one, as long as you're not expecting $700 performance out of it. After the oil change, I will revisit my review and update accordingly. This fork comes stock on a lot of bikes, but don't go rushing out to replace it if you fall within the stock spring body weight recommendation of 160-170lbs. For a heavier rider (like myself at 225), you will have to reconsider adjusting it to suit your needs.

This is an XC fork, and not really intended for drops and big hits.

More to come later on this fork.

Thanks for reading my ramblings. If any of this info helps, please let me know - it keeps me coming back and typing away. I'll try to stay more on top of the updates, but especially with some of the products I'm riding right now. My next review will be on the Maxxis Ardent 29'er tires.

Ride Reports and Ramblings Pt.2

As a continuation from yesterday's post - let's move on...

Remember that Leader 510H SS bike I built up? Well, I had yet another brilliant idea of swapping out frames for a dirt jumper. Here was my OCD/ridiculous justification:
"I already have a MTB... and I really love urban riding... boy, a frame on closeout can be had for cheap... all I need to do is swap out parts and sell the Leader frame to make it all balance out... yeah... urban dirt jumper..."
So, finding a small Jamis Komodo for $120, I built this bad boy up. It's heavy, though, and square taper cranks are really not ideal for what I want to do with this. But, then again, I won't be doing anything more than bunny hopping piles of leaves and jumping curbs - so I figure it should hold up just fine.

I took it out for a "spin" that ended up being 25 miles to downtown San Jose and back, and aside from being extremely uncomfortable, it hopped and rolled the streets as a budget DJ bike should. I'm really happy with it, but the color scheme did not quite come out as I envisioned, so I may be changing the look soon.

This will be the bike I'm riding on the 4130 Subway Series Ride in a few weeks, and I'm positive that it will work perfectly for that and future rides.

Hicks Rd to Mt. Umunhum with Nelson34 (Robert)

With the Mt. Hamilton Superbowl Sunday ride coming up on Feb. 5th, a lot of the locals are getting ready for that big, grueling climb to the southbay's other highest peak, James Lick Observatory.

One of the more anxious riders is my pal, Robert (or "Nelson34" on MTBR), who is looking at improving his climbing endurance. He's a decent enough rider, and in fact, on this ride he was ahead of me the entire time, but he has that fire in his belly to improve.

When the both of us decided it was time to dust off the road bikes, we met at the Los Alamitos Creek trailhead with the intent on getting in a good road ride; and what better loop to do it on than Hicks Rd. to Mt. Umunhum? The Pacer is outfitted with a flat bar again - and the feel completely mimics my Pake C'Mute, which I like.

Well, the climb is as hard as it will always be and the Surly Pacer rolled it as it always does. Robert and I got to talking how a bike can make the difference, as his road race bike (as opposed to my simple "road bike") seemed to fly up that hill, even geared with the traditional 52/39 crankset and 11-28 gearing. Robert claims that the bike does make the difference, and I'm beginning to believe that claim. I would never trade in my Surly Pacer for an aggressive road bike, but this aspect of my traditional road riding bike is something to keep in mind when I feel like I'm getting dropped.
