FMX legend Matt “Schuie” Schubring will host round three of the Australian FMX Championships, the UNIT Invitational, in his hometown of Boonah, South East Queensland, on Saturday September 14. After making a welcome return to competition in 2013 Schuie is excited about the challenge of both organising and competing in the event. We caught up with Schuie to find out what he has planned for the first event he’s organised in him hometown since 2007.
Schuie, it’s great to see you’re hosting round three of the AFMXC. How are you feeling about it: I’m excited. Lesley, my wife, and I were talking earlier this year about how cool it would be to hold another FMX event. My last one was in 2007 and people are always asking me when I’m going to do it again. Now the timing is perfect to align it with RFDmx and the Australian FMX Championships.
Your 2007 event was quite successful. Are you expecting a good turnout for your round of the AFMXC series: Yeah, definitely. I’ll be putting a lot more effort into this event and looking to attract a big crowd. Last time it was poured with rain everywhere except Boonah. As a result a lot of people didn’t show, but we still had close to a thousand in attendance. I’ll be stoked if we get upwards of 1500 people to this event.
You have Unit supporting this event, which should help: I’m stoked to have Unit backing this round of the championship. I’ve been with them for many years now and I’ve always enjoyed working with the boys, as they have supported many of the crazy ideas I’ve had over the years.
What have you got planned for the upcoming event: Number one is I’m hoping for a nice day, and I’ll have a nice flowing course for the riders to compete on, which has been updated a lot since 2007. I was really impressed with the level of riding at the previous Coonabarabran round of the AFMXC, and I want to make sure the riders are really comfortable on the course so they’ll be able to bust out their tricks safely. The crowd will have good vantage points to spectate from right next to the course, and during the breaks I’ll have some displays and stalls to keep them interested. Our local hobby shop plans to have some helis and planes flying around to keep the kids excited, plus I’ll bring in the Crusty Demons monster truck to do a few demos in the paddock adjacent to the course. It’s great to see you back riding FMX contests.
What are your thoughts on the AFMXC round at Coonabarabran last weekend: Yeah I surprised myself at the first round I entered at Coonabarabran as I didn’t get in as much practice as I would’ve liked. I felt rusty in practice and was coming off the flu, so my head wasn’t so clear dialing in my flips and bigger tricks. After thinking a lot about the big course overnight everything came together for me once the event got under way. I didn’t make any mistakes and kept everything nice and smooth and was happy to take second on the day behind Joel Brown, who rode really well.
So is there a party once your round is done and dusted: Sure is! Everyone’s welcome to join the riders and crew at the Boonah Golf Club where there’s a nice outdoor area we can hang, and an indoor bar area where we’ll have a band playing for those wanting to let loose on the dance floor. I look forward to seeing you at the event!
