Queensland freestyle motocross legend Matt Schubring proved he’s still one of the best FMX riders in the country after claiming victory at the Unit Invitational round of the Australian FMX Championships (AFMXC) at his home compound at Boonah, Qld, on Saturday.

Schubring, who pulled double-duty by both organising and competing at the event, was at his stylish best around the technical course, as he threw each trick perfectly in front of a 1,000-strong crowd. “It’s been a big month and I didn’t get as much ride-time as the other boys; I was busy building the course as well as organising and promoting an event, but I’m stoked on how everything went today,” a beaming Schubring said afterwards.
“The competition was tough and a lot of guys have stepped up. There was a bit of wind out there, but everyone dealt with it and did what they had to do.”

Schubring’s day was made slightly easier after early championship leader Joel Brown had a big mishap during qualifying that saw him fall 30ft onto his heels. Despite barely being able to walk on the suspected fractured limbs, Brown gritted his teeth and rode hard to make the final three and keep his championship hopes alive. “It was a hard day at the office, that’s for sure,” Brown mused. “I hit neutral through the double-double section and I took the impact on my heels. My main concern was to gain enough points for the series, so after two runs where I tried to keep as much pressure off my heels as possible, I was content to place third and opted out of the top three showdown.”

Second overall for the day was current Underground Championship leader Callum Shaw, who has spent a lot of time riding with Schubring after recently buying his “Schuieville” property. “I’m pretty pumped to finish second today,” Shaw said afterwards. “At the previous round at Coonabarabran I finished fourth and set myself a goal to get on the podium here. It feels great to have this first podium under the belt; owning Schuie’s old place has been a big benefit for my riding.”
Victoria’s Ryan Brown impressed many with his big, clean tricks on his way to fourth place, while Gold Coaster Pete Anderson rounded out the top five with his signature smooth style.
The fourth and final round of the AFMXC, the Precise Open, will be held at Mackay, Qld on October 19.
