Tom Pages 1st in Red Bull X-Fighters Qualifying

The 2nd round of Red Bull X-Fighters is going down right now in Glen Helen, USA, on the biggest FMX competition ever built! This time around Unit has 2 team riders invited to the event including up-and-comer Maikel Melero from Spain, and inovative Frenchman Tom Pages.
Tom has really carved his own path through the FMX scene, and opts for a more style, fun and flow attitude in his riding. This has meant that Tom is not often in the spotlight, however, over the last 12 months Tom has been turning alot of his heads with his massive whips, body varial tricks and he even landed a flair on a dirt bike! Tricks that Tom simply learns for fun, and not competition rewards.
This round was Tom's first invite back to X-Fighters in over 2 years, and with a fresh enthusiasm he attacked the opportunity with his unique style, qualifying for the event 1st ahead of all the regular favourites such as Levi Sherwood, Danny Torres and USA big gun Todd Potter.
The upset was news to some, but all of Tom's friends and fellow riders knew that his bike skills and ability were just waiting to come out on the world stage once again. Tom will now compete in the event finals tomorrow (Saturday 2pm California time) where he will be keen to hold onto the momentum he has now built, and hopefully land ontop of the podium.
You can see more news and updates regularly at the Red Bull X-Fighters Official Website, and you will also be able to watch the main event live at the same place. It will kick off at 3pm USA Cali time, 8am AUS Eastern time or 11pm in London.

Father's day weekend
What a weekend. Marcus and I drove back to Butte Montana to meet up with his Mom so he can spend the next month with her in North Dakota. We had planned to hit up some skateparks along the way but unfortunately the rain followed us all the way from Oregon and kept us off the bikes. We still stopped and tortured ourselves checking out what we were missing out on. We still made it to Butte in just over 12 hours.

I was pretty excited about the fact that I got to see both kids on Father's day since I haven't seen my daughter since November.
After saying our goodbyes I headed out to make the most of the drier weather and check out the Butte skatepark. Early on a Sunday the park was empty. It had kind of a weird street set up and a couple pool inspired bowls. No bikes. I ignored that rule and took a few runs in the larger bowl, but the high elevation got me winded quick so I didn't stay long.

It was still wet looking in Missoula so I didn't bother stopping on the way back and motored on to Spokane. Trying to find directions for the Spokane park I discovered I missed an opportunity to session in Idaho at the Coeur d'Alene park. Still sessioning in three different states in one day was a new record for me. Spokane was a fun park, composed of mostly below ground bowls and a snake run that flowed well.

The Umatilla cowboy brought back memories of a road trip long ago to Nelson, BC Canada for a Contest.
Irrigon, Oregon had the park I was most looking forward to riding. It's a cool set up with a full pipe completely open on one end and capsuled on the other with a door to carve over. 300 miles from home by yourself kind of makes one a bit hesitant to try certain things and the carve over the door was one of those. Next time. I still had fun even holding back a bit, better than braking myself off and being stranded so far from home.
What a difference a day makes.
A pretty good Father's day, I got lot's of text messages from people wishing me happy Father's day, rode parks in three states, and got surprised by the wife with sexy photo's she took with my bike. Stoked. Maybe I'll post a couple later, still waiting on digital copies.

The Saga Continues... (day 3 part 1)
This is where the Flashback goes in our story.
Back to that Hoffman Bikes ad with Mat blasting 20 Ft on that huge quarter. Back to watching the Big Air event debut in the X games, with the current MegaRamp, and half jokingly saying "I wanna jump that!". I never expected to ever even have a remote opportunity to try it. I was taking my full face helmet to Woodward West just in case. Planning out this trip I told Shad I really wanted to at least give it a go. Shad thought there was no way they were even going to let us on it. I hoped he was wrong. I told Riley thinking maybe he would be down to try it.
"You're calling out the MEGARAMP?"
"No, just saying I really want to check it out. It's a box jump."
"But it's the Fucking MEGARAMP dude!"
Wednesday, before his transformation into Boozedawg, Andy called me to let me know they were opening up the MegaRamp on Saturday between 1 and 4 p.m. He of all people was down to try. Thursday when the crew rolled in Shad was excited about it too, but made it clear he wanted to take runs at the quarter but at least wanted to try since it was a box jump. Riley just laughed at us and said we would see when we got there.
"It's the fucking MEGARAMP!"
Friday night after checking in Captain Cradle was beat and called it a night. Fresno wore him out enough to quit thinking about riding Woodward for the first time in the morning. Boozedawg, unchecked, spreads his brand of havoc upon the lodge.
Ran into this guy on the way to our room.
I was in the lodge bar with Eric and Jeremy trying to catch up with Ben Ward when Shad waved me over. He was talking to Woodward resident pro, Coco Zurita, about the MegaRamp. Coco told us in his Chilean accent that the biggest thing to overcome was the long ride down the roll in to the lip. So much time to get in your head and blow your confidence. You're going so fast downhill on skatelite that there is no way to really back out once you get going and the long approach allows for plenty of time for doubt. Stay confident, stay relaxed, no quick or panicked movements. No problem. Sounds good for something I have still yet to see in person.
In the morning Riley made sure Mac's bike was unpacked and reassembled and woke us up so Mac could get down to the park early. Most of the crew was up and pumped up Captain Cradle to give Boozedawg yet another run for his money. We had about a 50/50 split on those who had been before and those who had not. I got to see what I must have looked like rolling into Woodward for the first time. Screw Disneyland, for my money Woodward is the happiest place on earth.
The morning session most of us took it fairly easy, nibbling around loosening up, trying to make sure our old tired bones would make it through the day. Anthony and Joe headed for the Art Park in the Hanger to ride Flatland with the rest of the old scuffers. Shad, Pizza, and ODB sessioned the new Backyard mini. Last year it was still under construction. I was surprised to find myself sessioning the Enterprise with the Captain and having fun. Last year it had confused and frustrated me and I borderline hated it. The difference a year makes. From there I also finally got a glimpse on the hillside of the other major addition since last year.

Sea Otter Recon Mission Ride Report and more on the On-One 456...
I know I should have been at Church on Sunday (Palm Sunday) but I went on a April Fool's Recon Mission with Ken and Newton instead. This ride was to specifically investigate the Sea Otter course and see how to plan it out for race day.
This was my first time riding Laguna Seca, and I have to say that it was actually pretty awesome. TONS of land to be ridden and a few really fun single track sections. But the land is so vast and so intertwined, you can really get lost out there.
The Sea Otter course for the Cat3 (Fat3 is what I call it for myself) is actually not as punishing as I thought it would be. Yes, there is some cranked-out climbing, but there are also a lot of recovery sections and fast, pinned flat areas. I am especially excited about the single track sections, because if it dries out more, it will be rail'able, which is definitely my riding strengths.
This is a pretty nasty, very sandy downhill section where I simply unclipped, hung my right foot out and slid down it - somehow managing to keep it upright. You can see, Ken decided to run down it. I foresee some epic crashes on this section.
I am racing with a CamelBak, which I never wear when I ride. I don't want to fiddle with trying to grab the water bottle while I'm tapped out, and I know I may blast through one water bottle - so I'm choosing to race with 35-40 ounces in the bladder. The CamelBak worked well and I think it should be great for the 16 mile course.
Back to the On-One 456...
This bike is totally different with the new 400mm seat post installed. With proper leg extension on my downstroke when pedaling, it is now an efficient climber (to a certain extent). It is not, by any means, near the efficiency of a true XC bike, but for all mountain riding, I have to say that I am enjoying it quite a bit. The technical climbs are simply a blast and railing on double tracks with jumps and other fun things is what this bike does really, really well.
I still think that maybe an 18" would be more to my liking, but the 16" with the long flagpole sticking out of the seat post tube seems to be just fine.
If you are in that strange "average" height category (5'9" - 5'10") I would advise to try riding a friend's 456 before ordering a frame. I really think I would've went with an 18" if I had the opportunity to try one for fit. For your reference, I am 5'9" with a 30" inseam.
This was my first time riding Laguna Seca, and I have to say that it was actually pretty awesome. TONS of land to be ridden and a few really fun single track sections. But the land is so vast and so intertwined, you can really get lost out there.
The Sea Otter course for the Cat3 (Fat3 is what I call it for myself) is actually not as punishing as I thought it would be. Yes, there is some cranked-out climbing, but there are also a lot of recovery sections and fast, pinned flat areas. I am especially excited about the single track sections, because if it dries out more, it will be rail'able, which is definitely my riding strengths.
This is a pretty nasty, very sandy downhill section where I simply unclipped, hung my right foot out and slid down it - somehow managing to keep it upright. You can see, Ken decided to run down it. I foresee some epic crashes on this section.
I am racing with a CamelBak, which I never wear when I ride. I don't want to fiddle with trying to grab the water bottle while I'm tapped out, and I know I may blast through one water bottle - so I'm choosing to race with 35-40 ounces in the bladder. The CamelBak worked well and I think it should be great for the 16 mile course.
Back to the On-One 456...
This bike is totally different with the new 400mm seat post installed. With proper leg extension on my downstroke when pedaling, it is now an efficient climber (to a certain extent). It is not, by any means, near the efficiency of a true XC bike, but for all mountain riding, I have to say that I am enjoying it quite a bit. The technical climbs are simply a blast and railing on double tracks with jumps and other fun things is what this bike does really, really well.
I still think that maybe an 18" would be more to my liking, but the 16" with the long flagpole sticking out of the seat post tube seems to be just fine.

Giddy as a school girl!
Today is the day! Impatiently waiting on Shad and the van full of the rest of the crew to pick us up. Headed on down to Woodward West for the Old guy jam. Not sure 100% who all is rolling down with us in the van. Some people were maybe going maybe not. Guess when they show I'll know and post a list of old fools rolling down. Should be a blast. Hitting a few parks, Myrtle Creek, Talent, and Ashland, on the way down. Guess the plan is stay with Solid Bikes tonight and get up early hit the bike park in Fresno Friday morning and on to Woodward. Stoked. For all of you not making it, sorry so sad, I'll keep you posted on the trip over the next few days.

The Leader is a Race Bike & First Impressions on the Suntour Epicon RLD Fork
I present to you, ladies and germs, the bike I will be huffin' and puffin' with at the 2012 Sea Otter Classic. I've already had the opportunity to ride the newly dressed Leader a few times, twice with the new Suntour Epicon RLD Fork.
The bike is heavy - but reasonable - at 27.3lbs. With 16 speeds, it has enough granny to make it up steep climbs without wheelie'ing to your death, and it tracks as a good XC bike should. I've been riding the Leader for awhile so I'm used to what it is capable of - but what truly has changed this bike is the new fork.
I bought the Suntour Epicon RLD off eBay for a $238 bargain. After reading as many reviews as possible, I found that riders were very happy with it for XC - the features and adjustability are everything you'd want on a good fork. Air, rebound and remote lockout makes this fork run alongside quality forks such as the Rock Shox SID Race that cost twice as much.
On the trail, the fork tracked very well and did not pogo whatsoever. I was impressed how quiet it was, and on the rocky descends, it sopped up the bumps and softball sized rocks just beautifully. The true test of the fork was the Rocky Ridge descend and it was easy to go fast down that trail with complete confidence.
I somehow managed to nail the air and rebound, and I had full travel on the worst of it.
Out of the seat climbing without the lockout didn't feel like I was bouncing around and when I did lock out the fork, it did not give as much as my SID Race fork did. Horizontal flex was unnoticeable.
All in all, I think I actually like this fork much better than my SID Race.
I'm curious to see how the Epicon RLD fares in the long run, but for $238, one really can't complain. I will update my review after 3 months of use and I expect it to work just as well then as it does now.

Father's day weekend
What a weekend. Marcus and I drove back to Butte Montana to meet up with his Mom so he can spend the next month with her in North Dakota. We had planned to hit up some skateparks along the way but unfortunately the rain followed us all the way from Oregon and kept us off the bikes. We still stopped and tortured ourselves checking out what we were missing out on. We still made it to Butte in just over 12 hours.

I was pretty excited about the fact that I got to see both kids on Father's day since I haven't seen my daughter since November.
After saying our goodbyes I headed out to make the most of the drier weather and check out the Butte skatepark. Early on a Sunday the park was empty. It had kind of a weird street set up and a couple pool inspired bowls. No bikes. I ignored that rule and took a few runs in the larger bowl, but the high elevation got me winded quick so I didn't stay long.

It was still wet looking in Missoula so I didn't bother stopping on the way back and motored on to Spokane. Trying to find directions for the Spokane park I discovered I missed an opportunity to session in Idaho at the Coeur d'Alene park. Still sessioning in three different states in one day was a new record for me. Spokane was a fun park, composed of mostly below ground bowls and a snake run that flowed well.

The Umatilla cowboy brought back memories of a road trip long ago to Nelson, BC Canada for a Contest.
Irrigon, Oregon had the park I was most looking forward to riding. It's a cool set up with a full pipe completely open on one end and capsuled on the other with a door to carve over. 300 miles from home by yourself kind of makes one a bit hesitant to try certain things and the carve over the door was one of those. Next time. I still had fun even holding back a bit, better than braking myself off and being stranded so far from home.
What a difference a day makes.
A pretty good Father's day, I got lot's of text messages from people wishing me happy Father's day, rode parks in three states, and got surprised by the wife with sexy photo's she took with my bike. Stoked. Maybe I'll post a couple later, still waiting on digital copies.
