MOVING OUT OF HERE! New site: RiderInBlack.com

Hey Friends,

I'm going to be posting at a different site from here-on-out: www.riderinblack.com

I have my specific reasons, mostly because I like the interface much more than Blogger's. I will still retain my e-mail address of dion@dionridesbikes.com, but will moving over to dion@riderinblack.com as time moves on. Eventually, I will delete this blog entirely and will be at riderinblack.com only.

So, please give me some time to move my thoughts and words over to the new site. Thanks for reading!

-Dion

Bike Riding is just Not Climbing...

For the past year, I've been pondering how and why being a fast climber is the pinnacle of MTB riding and road riding. At least, outside of the loose-jersey DH guys, this seems to be what many are striving for. Many times I've read - and experienced myself - people's "fitness running out of talent"; you know the folks who haul ass uphill just to white knuckle and on brake a descend? I also understand people's fear and risk trade-off's - although with some focus on skillful descending, many (if not most) people can overcome this.

A lot of people talk about working on their fitness for climbing - and granted, most of us can use that sort of focus. Myself, I've been trying to get faster on climbs for the past 5 years (since I started MTB'ing seriously). However, why not take a few rides out of the week to focus on downhill skills, cornering, obstacles and flow? These skills, at least in my Cat3 point of view, are equally as valuable to being a great climber.

I appreciate it when I see fast riders at the top of Strava on both uphills and downhills - but also find it strange to see fast climbers WAY behind me on DH segments. I ask: What happened there? Even though I get smoked at races, it amazes me how much faster riders will hold me up on the downhill sections.

People use the old clich: "Races are won on the climbs..." - but what good is that if you're not racing?

I get that many people ride for many reasons - and some people will just huddle-up to their strengths. My strength is downhill, technical and flow (God Bless BMX) - so I work on my climbing to try and balance my riding... but I still work on my downhill a LOT. Not only is it fun, but to me, it makes sense to be a well-rounded rider.

Now that I got that off my chest, here's Chad Degroot's segment from Baco 10...

Diary of a Halfpacker - Day 1

A few month back Prasheel Gopal asked me about starting a new diary to learn Halfpacker. There have been many challenges so far. The biggest one being time. I don't have as much time as I used to but I am going to start this journey and thanks to Prasheel I am going to focus on a trick I have wanted to do for some time now. The next one I will post will show progression!

Day one

So the crew is Shad Johnson, Chester Blacksmith, Jeremy Davis, Riley Peetz, Eric Jenson, Joe Lumina, Anthony Tanglin, Andy McIntosh, Marcus Walter and Frank Walter. All of us crammed in the big ass rental van. The vans pretty dialed we have TV, and a PS2 so bmx videos and video games fill in the boredom of the drive. Left my house around 9:30 and made first stop in Myrtle Creek to ride the park. Fun session, nothing to heavy going down but the good weather made things really nice. Got Marcus and Andy to carve over the tunnel opening after some heckling. Marcus got our heart rates up on his first try not quite making it and hopping in the last part and clipped rear wheel and blew off the pedals. By the time we left he had it on lock. Next stop was Talent after a crappy lunch at DQ. Road trip diet. Talent used to seem so big but with all the new parks that are so much bigger it felt small now. 5 years can really change your perspective. Still another fun session in shorts and a t-shirt. Dialed. Andy and I were joking about not knowing how many In and Out burgers were between Eugene and Woodward but traveling with Shad we would find out. First one was in Redding our last stop before arriving at the Solid Bikes warehouse in Sacremento around 2 am to crash on the floor. Big thanks to Aaron Huff for free lodging. Next stop is Fresno bike park and onto Woodward.

Rad Dad's Return to riding!

This is the first time I have filmed in 2014. Prior to this video I have rode maybe 3 times this year for a few minutes. Many people have messaged me wondering if I was still riding. Riding has been a time issue for awhile. I am trying to bring a balance to family life and riding time. I feel great about my riding session. Its been so very long since I have rode my bike and it felt great to make my return to riding. All my basic trick are still there. I need to have a few more sessions just like this and start working on my longer combinations. Keep on Riding!

Is Passion a Learned Behavior?

I've been chipping away at "Bones Brigade: An Autobiography (2012)" for a few nights after I get home from client appointments and my wife goes to bed. I reflect on how these "children" (Tony Hawk, Lance Mountain, Steve Caballero, Rodney Mullen, etc.) excelled to become the highest level skateboarders of the time, all under the age of 18. My mind is blown that these youngsters pioneered every trick you see today, including the vert ollie, the flatland ollie and the McTwist.

I feel a close bond to this time in that 1) during those years, it was a toss-up between me going BMX or Skater (obviously I chose BMX) and 2) I grew up in a hotbed of skateboarding (Santa Cruz, Ca.). I relate to all the things in that video, but I mostly relate to The Stoke.

The Stoke - or what many call "Passion" - is something that seems to tie these young skaters together.

Stories of them crashing, getting up, doing the trick over and over for hours until they nailed it. Tales of Rodney Mullen getting up at 2am in the morning, telling the rest of the boys that he's "going skating" and coming back with dozens of new tricks at dawn.

The drive that these youngsters had was fuel for the fire. Stacey Peralta guided and mentored them, making sure that the fame and money didn't go to their head. He kept them humble and drove the desire to progress.

This leaves me with a question: Is Passion a Learned Behavior?

I'm thinking of my parents, who encouraged and supported me to put my 100% into everything I got into. When I started riding freestyle BMX, they did everything they could to get me what I needed to get better. Same goes with karate, music, etc.

I also think of those who may not have such a supporting family, but have friends and spouses that do the same. It's like they are just as stoked for you (if not more) than you are for yourself... cheering and loving you every step of the way. I still get a gigantic grin whenever I see top-level athletes do the unimaginable, and stand their while fans and friends envelope them in cheers, hugs, arms raised in victory - as if they completed the feat themselves.

Conversely, I think of those who have no passion - for anything. What makes those people so un-passionate? Whether it's riding a bike, surfing, yo-yo or scrapbooking... I have a hard time imagining a life without passion.

They seem to make excuses like "I'm busy" or "no money", etc. but I feel that those are just excuses. I'm as busy and tight on finances as the next person... but nothing gets me more stoked than thinking about my next ride.

What do you guys think? Can you look back and find the source of your passion that keeps you going? Where did you get you get your passionate drive from?

Please leave a comment and lend my your thoughts!

Adventures in BMX: BMX groms, saving a pill zombie's life and getting amped for OSBMXR...

I just don't get this kind of experience on my MTB. Maybe it's because I'm too busy chasing Strava segments. Anyway.

Sunday is my designated BMX day... and that's when I injure myself so much, it's actually relaxing to MTB. Currently I have random bruises, scrapes, and a kinked neck. I tell people this: the reason why I don't crash on my MTB is because I use all my crash tokens riding my BMX. It's true.

Whenever I ride, I always end up passing by BMX groms (little pre-teen kids) and they always check out what I'm riding, and wondering why a guy their Dad's age is scooting around on a 20" bike. I busted some manuals, 360 bunnyhops and a couple hang 5's and that got them clamoring up and asking a million questions. Here are the one's that made me LOL:

1) Do you know Ryan Nyquist? (because I ride a Haro in S. San Jose)
2) Can you bunnyhop over that? (pointing at a rail that was literally 4ft. high)
3) Can you barspin?
4) Can you flat 3?
5) How do you keep your balance like that?
6) Did you ride in the Dew Tour?
7) Do you have a son that rides BMX?
8) Why is your seat so high? (I have a WHOPPING 5" of seatpost showing)
9) Why do you have so many pegs? (4)
10) Why is your bike so quiet? (Freecoaster)
11) What's a freecoaster?
12) Why don't you have a better bike? (I love my Haro! LOL.)
13) Why do you have a front brake?
14) Can you jump these stairs?
15) When did you start riding? ("When I was your age")
16) etc.

The BMX scene down here in Almaden is literally nonexistent. These kids never seen flatland, or even a hop to fastplant. Their minds were filled with barspins and tailwhips. They loved it all. Then I realized, I may be able to inspire these kids to keep riding just by being an old man on a bike showing them how to do a few things.

Then I realized I'd be a fuggin' awesome BMX dad. THEN I realized, this is how BMX has survived over the years. This is why us old guys can't stop. There are generations ahead of us that need to be inspired. Anyway, I taught them how to to footjam tailwhips and got them thinking about wall rides. One kid even learned how to peg manual. My work was done... so I thought.

Then there was this chick:

So, I'm riding home (jazzed for a little Game of Thrones action) and I see this female stumbling across the parking lot with bare feet. Then she went up to a Ford Club Wagon and was trying to open it with a Scion key. Then she paused, got all wobbly, then tried some more. So I stopped her, and asked her some questions - then I asked her if I could try and I took her keys from her. She was so high, she didn't even resist. I told her to sit down and asked her if there was anybody she knew or family or friends that could come get her. No cell, no ID... she said her boyfriend jumped out of the car. I stayed with her and she was talking gibberish, talking about how "Jared cheated on her with a girl from Facebook" and "...you can be from Jupiter and align with the spirits. Then I asked if she was drinking and if she took some pills.

"I took some pills last night..."

"What about today?"

Dead stare. Like Walking Dead. PILL ZOMBIE!

So I called 911 and P-Marshall's doppelganger showed up and I took off.

Nobody was going to help this poor girl and God forbid the Club Wagon was actually her's and she went off driving, high on 'scrips.

BMX always provides weird adventures. I highly recommend you get one.

Old School BMX Reunion

All those who have been invited to OSBMXR 2013 and are attending are starting to post comments, pictures and videos. I am so friggin' amped to go, I haven't been this excited about BMX in a long time. I'm starting to feel really dialed with my Haro, and it's time to start going for things like fakie tree rides and 360's off things now. It's strange, because after getting back into BMX, I thought I was pretty much keeping it to flatland - but now that I have a do-it-all bike, I've found joy in street riding again. I forgot how decent I was at it, so the new bike has opened up new doors for me.

Here's Maurice "Drob" Meyer (of the infamous Curb Dogs) and old school freestyler, Rick Allison, doing it right. I don't know neither Drob nor Rick outside of just a little back and forth on Facebook, but it looks like both freestyle icons are ready to roll. According to Rick's FaceBook posts, he is now here in California (SoCal). I remember him being a total showman - looks like nothing has changed! If you ever come up to NorCal, Rick, you got a crew to ride with.

Going Back to My Old Ways - Re-re-reinventing the Pak C'Mute

A few weeks ago, I had the idea of getting back to the set-up I had on my Pak C'Mute before going to the traditional drop handlebars: MTB risers and a 1X set up. For the last 2 1/2 years, my C'mute has gone through a number of transformations - mostly me just swapping parts bin bits and moving things back and forth. However, a little disappointed with riding the drops and never really getting used to them, I decided to go back to the sweet spot that I loved so much.

My musings can be chronicled in this MTBR thread.
"For me, I used to race with a flat bar and felt SUPER comfortable with it. I could just fling it around - and with drops... not so much.

Then, for some dumb reason I thought, "Well, I should go back to pure traditional 'cross". What I ended up with was a bike that hung in my garage most of the time. What really made me go back, was the amount of seat time I was putting into my 1986 Rockhopper Comp.

I completely modernized [my Rockhopper] with a wide handlebar, 1X9 set-up and modern wheels and tires. I also upgraded the brakes to XTR V's with the love from my homie, Froride1 on MTBR. I LOVE that bike!

So... I thought it'd be awesome to put the ol' CX bike back to where I felt best with it: non-traditional, huge bars, 1X set-up. I had a double on there before, and I hated shifting through a front DR, so I found that the 38T X 11-36 was a big enough gear ratio for long CX rides, road rides, and even racing for my level.

I'm having a blast on the new set-up. MUCH better than the drops I had. I feel way more confident on dirt descending and flicking it around rocks and roots. I can hold my line in sand and mud - and I don't feel like I'm straining my neck. The only drawback is the lack of aero [I had] with the drops - but I feel the benefits [of this set up] (for me) outweigh those drawbacks. My justification is - if I feel super great with wide handlebars on my MTB... why not just replicate it on my CX bike?

Really, the only reason why to have drops for racing would be rules or maybe personal preference. But for the local organization here, they don't have a bar width rule, so it's all good.

I get made fun of for my wide bars, but hey - they work!"

I don't know why I fought my "natural" place with a wide MTB riser on my cyclocross bike. Quite possibly I fell into the "purist" trap, or maybe I thought my riding would be better with drops. It wasn't.

Additionally, switching to mini v-brakes proved a significant advantage over cantilever brakes. Hard braking, modulation and scrubbing speed before turns improved vastly.

Put a carbon fiber fork in this bike - wide-bar'd 1X set-up is DONE. I'm leaving it this way!
