TOM PAGES ? 2013 X-FIGHTERS CHAMP!

TOM PAGES

UNIT rider Tom Pages of France won the 2013 Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour on Friday 19th July in front of a frenzied Madrid crowd of 23,000 with what was probably the most electrifying runs ever in the season finale. Japan’s Taka Hagashino finished second on a thrilling night of FMX in Madrid’s famous Las Ventas bullring with Javier Villegas of Chile taking third place. Pages took the World Tour Championship with 360 points with the 2011 champion, Dany Torres of Spain, in second with 260 points.

Pages took FMX to new heights in front of the big Madrid crowd, the most enthusiastic on the calendar each year. He dug deep into his big bag of tricks on the tight but technical Las Ventas course and threw down a heavy run of tricks no other rider has ben able to match consistently throughout the series.

Executing a Flair on a dirt-bike is insane, throw in a Tsunami on top is genius! Photo: Flo Hagena/Redbull

Reflecting how close the world’s FMX elite has become, the Frenchman became the fourth different World Tour champion in the last four years. Pages epitomised consistency all season, getting on the podium in all five events. On Friday he gave what was probably his most brilliant performance ever in the final against Higashino, nailing his exciting Flair (a 540-degree turn off a quarter-pipe), his Special Flip (a mid-air back-flip above his seat) and the Volt (a mid-air 360-degree spin off his bike) and then sending the crowd into amazement with his new trick, a Flair Tsunami - where his legs stretch out off the bike midway through his 540 rotation.

“This is more than a dream, it’s just amazing”, Pages said, clearly delighted to get his first victory in Madrid. “This is the best crowd in the world!”

Tom Pages plan now is to celebrate and let the win sink in before hitting the foam pit with the aim of learning an arsenal of new mind blowing tricks that will see him continue to be the rider breaking boundaries heading into the 2014 Redbull X-Fighters series.

Madrid results: 1. Thomas Pages (FRA), 2. Taka Higashino (JPN), 3. Javier Villegas (CHL), 4. Maikel Melero (ESP), 5. Dany Torres (ESP), 6. Levi Sherwood (NZL), 7. Rob Adelberg (AUS), 8. Josh Sheehan (AUS), 9. David Rinaldo (FRA), 10. Clinton Moore (AUS).

Final 2013 Wold Tour standings: 1. Pages 360 points, 2. Torres 260, 3. Higashino 245, 4. Adelberg 240, 5. Sherwood 225, 6. Villegas 150, 7. Rinaldo 125, 8. Adam Jones (USA) 120, 9. Melero 115, 10. Sheehan 115

Going Back to My Old Ways - Re-re-reinventing the Pak C'Mute

A few weeks ago, I had the idea of getting back to the set-up I had on my Pak C'Mute before going to the traditional drop handlebars: MTB risers and a 1X set up. For the last 2 1/2 years, my C'mute has gone through a number of transformations - mostly me just swapping parts bin bits and moving things back and forth. However, a little disappointed with riding the drops and never really getting used to them, I decided to go back to the sweet spot that I loved so much.

My musings can be chronicled in this MTBR thread.
"For me, I used to race with a flat bar and felt SUPER comfortable with it. I could just fling it around - and with drops... not so much.

Then, for some dumb reason I thought, "Well, I should go back to pure traditional 'cross". What I ended up with was a bike that hung in my garage most of the time. What really made me go back, was the amount of seat time I was putting into my 1986 Rockhopper Comp.

I completely modernized [my Rockhopper] with a wide handlebar, 1X9 set-up and modern wheels and tires. I also upgraded the brakes to XTR V's with the love from my homie, Froride1 on MTBR. I LOVE that bike!

So... I thought it'd be awesome to put the ol' CX bike back to where I felt best with it: non-traditional, huge bars, 1X set-up. I had a double on there before, and I hated shifting through a front DR, so I found that the 38T X 11-36 was a big enough gear ratio for long CX rides, road rides, and even racing for my level.

I'm having a blast on the new set-up. MUCH better than the drops I had. I feel way more confident on dirt descending and flicking it around rocks and roots. I can hold my line in sand and mud - and I don't feel like I'm straining my neck. The only drawback is the lack of aero [I had] with the drops - but I feel the benefits [of this set up] (for me) outweigh those drawbacks. My justification is - if I feel super great with wide handlebars on my MTB... why not just replicate it on my CX bike?

Really, the only reason why to have drops for racing would be rules or maybe personal preference. But for the local organization here, they don't have a bar width rule, so it's all good.

I get made fun of for my wide bars, but hey - they work!"

I don't know why I fought my "natural" place with a wide MTB riser on my cyclocross bike. Quite possibly I fell into the "purist" trap, or maybe I thought my riding would be better with drops. It wasn't.

Additionally, switching to mini v-brakes proved a significant advantage over cantilever brakes. Hard braking, modulation and scrubbing speed before turns improved vastly.

Put a carbon fiber fork in this bike - wide-bar'd 1X set-up is DONE. I'm leaving it this way!

ANDREU LACONDEGUY MY HIGHLIGHTS DOWNUNDER

ANDREU LACONDEGUY

UNIT all-round two-wheeled action sports legend Andreu Lacondeguy recently spent a month Down Under shredding trails, stomping dirt hits on both moto, mountain bike and BMX, surfing, partying, and basically just having the time of his life! Now back in his hometown of Barcelona, Spain, we caught up with the wild man to chat about some of the experiences that stand out in his mind from what he calls “A trip of a lifetime!”

Farm Jam, I showed up there with my filmer Nick Pescetto, we’d never been to New Zealand before, and first thing I see is the farm, the jumps on the freeride FMX course and a Yamaha YZ250 waiting for me. From that moment on it was three days of fun riding moto, MTB and BMX up to six hours a day with all the other riders, yeah that was one of my favourite parts of the trip right there!

andreu lacondeguy

Freeride jumps, that was definitely a little scary at the beginning because I’d never hit jumps like those before and the bike I was riding had stock suspension and one that I wasn’t used too. I had a few close moments, but I think out of all the events the freeride session was one of my favourite parts of Farm Jam because it was new to me and it was so good riding with all the guys hitting those big dirt hits, so sick!

The BMX Jam at Farm Jam was another favourite because 10-minutes before the comp started I wasn’t going to ride, but someone gave me a bike and I was super-chilled after finishing FMX and MTB so I just cruised the trails not doing many big tricks, but just watching everybody throw down and being a part of those crazy trains was so fun. I hadn’t ridden BMX for a long time before that session and it felt so good to be out there riding with the crew.

andreu lacondeguy

Three disciplines, I’ve done it before at Masters Of Dirt shows, but there you only do two moto, BMX, and MTB runs and you’re done, like only 10 jumps per night. At Farm Jam I was riding six hours straight without a break, competing in moto then MTB then BMX, and I was for sure tired at the end of the day and had a few dizzy spells after my BMX runs, but it was so sick!

Queenstown, NZ, I’d heard a lot of good things about Queenstown before going there and as soon as we hit the town I was amazed by the location, mountains, people, burgers, lake, sick trails, some of the best dirt jumps I’ve ever seen. Riders coming from all over the world to ride Red Bull Roast It, and after a week I didn’t want to leave.

Red Bull Roast It was so sick, showing up to those jumps I didn’t even have my BMX with me so I was just borrowing bikes from everyone and sessioning the trails every afternoon with the riders was super fun, priceless!

andreu lacondeguy

BBQ’s at the Red Bull house was another highlight, like we were staying in this insane mansion on top of the hill looking over the lake watching sunsets, drinking beer, after full days of riding. Yeah that was a favourite part of my trip knowing that after riding all day you’d be hanging on that deck with a good bunch of mates with the BBQ cranked. I cooked a little but I’m not much of a chef!

Airports were a big part of our trip. Flying from Barcelona in Spain to Australia and then to New Zealand we crossed the globe, and throw in three bikes, dirt-bike parts, clothes for a month, helmets, camera gear, packs, it gets expensive man! We had some trouble with customs in New Zealand because we were going there for a holiday, but also for a comp, so we didn’t know what to say, but somehow we managed to talk our way through it all, crazy times!

andreu lacondeguy

Different types of riding, like I think this trip is the first time I’ve ridden everything I’d ride back home, from BMX and MTB dirt jumps, downhill trails and freeride jumps, enduro, moto, FMX, freeride FMX, all in one trip is so sick, and why I think this has been one of my best trips ever man!

We surfed a little bit in Oz and checked out the Quicksilver Pro while there, which was great. We managed to get a few hours in the surf over a few days, and we sucked, it was crazy hard man, especially when there are a hundred people in the water around you! But yeah we loved it man, best trip ever, and we’ll be back again next year for sure! Ends.

Trails 2011

This Photo is from April 2008. This is right before the major transformation of the main line top to bottom. The newly thrown landing you see on the right was the eventual inspiration to shift the line right and make the left hip bigger to line you up for the long jumps down the hill after. Crazy thinking about the amount of dirt that has been moved since this photo and just how shitty everything looks in comparison to today. As you can see by the photos below things are already popping on the old lines. All the new stuff is getting there but still needs some work. Hit me up and get your dig and ride on.

Bike Riding is just Not Climbing...

For the past year, I've been pondering how and why being a fast climber is the pinnacle of MTB riding and road riding. At least, outside of the loose-jersey DH guys, this seems to be what many are striving for. Many times I've read - and experienced myself - people's "fitness running out of talent"; you know the folks who haul ass uphill just to white knuckle and on brake a descend? I also understand people's fear and risk trade-off's - although with some focus on skillful descending, many (if not most) people can overcome this.

A lot of people talk about working on their fitness for climbing - and granted, most of us can use that sort of focus. Myself, I've been trying to get faster on climbs for the past 5 years (since I started MTB'ing seriously). However, why not take a few rides out of the week to focus on downhill skills, cornering, obstacles and flow? These skills, at least in my Cat3 point of view, are equally as valuable to being a great climber.

I appreciate it when I see fast riders at the top of Strava on both uphills and downhills - but also find it strange to see fast climbers WAY behind me on DH segments. I ask: What happened there? Even though I get smoked at races, it amazes me how much faster riders will hold me up on the downhill sections.

People use the old clich: "Races are won on the climbs..." - but what good is that if you're not racing?

I get that many people ride for many reasons - and some people will just huddle-up to their strengths. My strength is downhill, technical and flow (God Bless BMX) - so I work on my climbing to try and balance my riding... but I still work on my downhill a LOT. Not only is it fun, but to me, it makes sense to be a well-rounded rider.

Now that I got that off my chest, here's Chad Degroot's segment from Baco 10...

The Chair Man aka Martin Aparijo just recently turned 50 and my good friend Fred Penner had a opportunity to do a interview with him. He reached out to the community of flatlanders to help with the interview. This great interview is being hosted by the incredible site http://www.flatmattersonline.com  I have placed this interview with the rest of the BMX Legends Interviews that are hosted here. Fred met Martin during a Rad reunion and asked Martin to shout me out. I have to say today I am really moved emotionally. Thanks Martin, Fred and Effraim for putting this all together.
