Flash Back Jacks!
If you haven't been to the Goods Bmx blog and seen the recent Flashback Fridays you should check them out. 2011 Superbowl Sunday Mt. Hamilton Ride
I did this ride last year on my Surly Pacer and had a decent time, albeit very, very slow. I did it again, this time with a serious handicap - I took the "UNBRANDED". This year was another time in a last place finish, although I had three guys to do it with me: Leopold Porkstacker, Nelson34 and SparkyJay from MTBR.com.
What got me to take the UNBRANDED was that Porkstacker (Brett) was going to take his fat bike, and so I thought it'd be supportive to take mine. By time it was all loaded up, my bike definitely weighed over 40lbs which was a serious heavy haul. It wasn't bad in the beginning, but near the end, my stomach started to growl and a slight bonking was in the works. I think the Surly would've prevailed - but I'll save that for next year. My guess I probably will get up a little faster - but that wasn't really the goal for this ride.
All in all, I had fun with our little social pace group. My favorite quote was from Robert (nelson34) when he said "My whole body is a cramp..."
I also learned that the "UNBRANDED" was a fine bike for getting up, but it was just very slow. I think this bike will do fine for rides that don't require a steady 20 mile climb, but my big road rides for this year will probably be on the Surly Pacer. The WTB Pure-V saddle started to get uncomfortable near the top, and eventually painful on my sit bones.
Good times and thanks to all for providing refreshments afterwards. Next year I'm not going to be such a freeloader and bring something. This ride, like Turkey Day, seems to be getting bigger every year!

VIDEO: Unit Farm Jam BMX Highlights
The Unit Farm Jam recently went down in the deep south of New Zealand.
Kiwi shredder Paul Langlands claimed the win for the second year in a row. Christchurch's Jake Prebble finished second, Anthony Napolitan third and Jed Mildon fourth.
The course is made up of 2 lines, the first is full of hips and was definitely the favourite on the day, while the 2nd was a straight run of big hits which finished with a big dirt quarter pipe.
Riders included Dane Searls, Cam Pianta, Anthony Napolitan, Paul Langlands, Jed Mildon, Jake Prebble and more.

Sierra Rd.; San Jose, Ca. with some Bike Party Folks
You know I'm always down for a good climb, so when I heard about this ride I thought I might as well join in. I've been mountain biking so much lately and I realize that if I don't get a few road rides in before the big charity rides we do every year, I'm going to regret not training. Part of my problem is that I'm deathly afraid of road riding because of cars, but when I'm in a group I feel a lot safer. What better way to see how bad of shape I've become over the winter than to get up Sierra?
Of course, I employed my trusty 1X8 Pake C'Mute, completely caked in mud from the trails. ? The climb was not as bad as I thought it was going to be. This was my first time climbing it, but since I've tackled so many difficult climbs before, I knew I would be able to do it. Every time I'm in the Berryessa area, I take a gander at Sierra Rd., see that initial wall, and ponder: I wonder how bad that is...
Well, I got up without a hitch. I did stop for a sec to check out the view and get some water for about a minute, and onward and upward I continued. I was one of the first ones at the top.
I have to hand it to all the folks that tackled this climb: it isn't for beginners. I was especially jazzed to see the array of bicycle types there were: road, touring, mountain bikes, old, new, and in-the-middle bikes. Today was proof that you don't need a $5,000 bike to accomplish something awesome. Good people, good climb. What more can you ask for?
