Saturday the 15th of October will be the biggest day in Kyle Baldock's life to date. We will get to see Kyle compete at the final round of 2011 Dew Tour, in the BMX Dirt and BMX Park contests, both of which he is in a strong position to win the overall championship.
Unit gave all of our Facebook fans the rare opportunity to find out more about Kyle, and ask him some questions about his riding, career, inspirations or anything else. Here are Kyle's answers, along with a cool selection of photos from 2011, his first big year on Dew Tour. (All photos by Ryan Guettler)
How long have you been riding for?
I've been riding for about 6 years now. Started off just riding my local BMX track with some mates, then I started riding skateparks.
How come it took you so long to get noticed in the BMX scene, when your that good?
I was never as good as what I am now, but I definitely think it's about being in the right spot at the right time.
Whats going through your mind before throwing down a run, when riding against great riders such as Cam White, who has already won a Dew Cup?
Cam White is a great mate of mine, I'm actually at his house with my girlfriend right now haha. I don't think about who I'm competing against, because to me I'm riding against myself and it's just like having a session with mates, just throwing down the best we got.
Is this your first year riding overseas?
I actually was in qualifying for Dew Tour last year and didn't get through qualifying! I also placed 4th at Asian X Games in 2010, and scored some firsts in a competition in North Carolina and one in Korea, so this is actually my second year competing overseas.
Where are you from and where do ride while at home?
I'm from the Gold Coast, Queensland. I ride the GC Compound a fair bit.
What is your biggest inspiration to ride?
I always got into alot of trouble at school and had people telling me I was going to go nowhere in my life. Riding was my escape from that, I definitely used that to inspire me to prove not only to them but to myself. And now my inspiration is also the loss of my brother, I've just learnt to turn negative into a positive, he has become my inspiration.
What will it mean to you if you win 1 or both of the Dew Tour championships at Las Vegas this weekend?
I love riding, and just winning a Dew stop in my second year is more than I imagined! To be in the running for possibly both of the Dew cups is just mind blowing.
Have you got any new tricks you are going to unveil in Vegas?
You'll just have to wait and see, maybe yes, maybe no :)
Anybody you would like to thank?
First off I want to thank my sponsors Unit Clothing, Monster Energy, Vans Shoes, Mirraco and Skull Candy. Also my girlfriend, family and all my mates.
