Unit FMX bad dude Kain Saul has just told us he will be off the bike for between six and nine months after crashing hard and doing serious damage to his shoulder at the Ken Block Gymkhana 10 days ago.
During practice for the main event, a gust of wind hit Sauly from the side and he landed sideways, careening into the concrete barrier alongside the Showtime FMX set-up.
“We were trying to get the timing right for a section in the show where Ken drifted between the ramp and the downramp while we jumped over him,” the Gold Coaster explained. “We had six or seven practice jumps, then a gust of wind came out of nowhere and hit me. We were set-up on the dragstrip with a concrete barrier down the side, so when I landed sideways I smashed straight into it.
“I didn’t scratch my Unit helmet, which was a plus, but I hit the fence with my hand above my head and it screwed my shoulder.”
With his injured limb giving him all sorts of trouble Kain went for an MRI on Friday and received the bad news on Monday that he is out for between six and nine months with a full shoulder reconstruction.
“I can raise my arms above my head no problem, but if I move it fast I can feel bone crunching around,” he explains. “My shoulder has been screwed for a fair while and I’ve been getting physio for a year. It’d come good but then I’d crash and it’d degrade back to 50 per cent. This last crash, which is similar to what my mate Steve Mini did to his shoulder in the Nitro Circus Show at the beginning of the year, just set it off.”
Sauly had shows lined up with Showtime for the rest of the year, and a good portion of 2012, but now he’s going to be stuck on the couch.
“I’ll probably get a painkiller addiction,” he laughs. “No doubt I’ll be hitting the PS3 hard and hanging out in the clubhouse my mate Top Dog is building out the back. I’m going to have a bit of time on my hands.”
All the best for a speedy recovery, buddy!
